Alexander Maclaren

Alexander Maclaren, Scottish Baptist minister, the “Prince of Expositors” for his preaching.

Alexander Maclaren (1826–1910) was a Scottish Baptist minister and one of the most respected preachers of the 19th century. Born in Glasgow, he entered ministry at age 21 and served congregations in Southampton and later in Manchester, where he remained for nearly 45 years. Renowned for his clear, eloquent, and practical exposition of Scripture, Maclaren drew large crowds and became a leading voice in British evangelicalism. He also served as president of the Baptist Union and published numerous volumes of sermons, later collected as Expositions of Holy Scripture. Known as the “Prince of Expositors,” his preaching emphasized Christ-centered teaching, spiritual depth, and practical application. Maclaren’s legacy endures through his sermons, which remain widely read for their devotional and expository value. Maclaren was renowned for his expository preaching—clear, thoughtful, and deeply devotional. His sermons were widely read and admired, many later published in multi-volume collections such as Expositions of Holy Scripture. His preaching combined scholarly insight with warm spirituality, making him a model for evangelical ministers in Britain and abroad. He also served as president of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (1875) and later of the Baptist World Alliance (1905). Though shy and retiring in personality, Maclaren’s influence was immense through both pulpit and print. He is often remembered as “the prince of expositors,” a title he shares in some circles with G. Campbell Morgan.
