William Jay

William Jay (1769–1853), long-serving nonconformist minister at Bath, influential devotional author.

William Jay (6 May 1769 – 27 December 1853) was an English nonconformist minister who served at Argyle Chapel. Bath for over sixty years. Born in Tisbury, Wiltshire, he initially worked in masonry but later studied theology under Cornelius Winter. Jay’s ministry was marked by accessibility, scholarly devotion, and evangelical fervor. He published many devotional works—such as Morning & Evening Exercises, The Christian Contemplated, and The Domestic Ministers Assistant—that remained in print long after his death. He died in Bath in December 1853.
