What does true biblical friendship look like? How do Christians build godly relationships that honor Christ while still confronting sin with humility and love? Is there a difference between friendship and fellowship in the church? And how should believers respond when a close friend or even a spouse begins to drift into ungodly behavior? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot unpack what Scripture teaches about friendship, accountability, and love within the body of Christ. Do you struggle with balancing truth and grace in your relationships, or how to form friendships that truly glorify God, this conversation offers a deeply biblical perspective. Watch, consider, and reflect, on how to love, correct, and grow together in your relationships through applying and living out the truth of God’s Word.
Right at the start a heartfelt but practical question is asked about concerns between those who should be the closest of friends: what should a Christian wife do if her husband begins to spend time with people who engage in ungodly behavior? Does speaking up mean she is usurping his role as leader in the home? Dr. Caldwell explains that biblical submission is not silence. A godly wife, out of love for her husband and obedience to God, has the right and the responsibility to raise spiritual concerns. First Peter 3 encourages a humble and reverent spirit that trusts God while also speaking truth with love. A Christian wife’s gentle correction can serve as a great help to her husband’s soul and to the health of their marriage.
Throughout the podcast, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot discuss how Christian friendship is not just about companionship or shared interests but about mutual growth in holiness and spiritual maturity. The Bible calls believers to walk together in truth and spiritual growth, helping one another live in obedience to Christ. This includes loving correction when a brother or sister falls into sin, accountability in the church, and choosing friends wisely who help strengthen rather than weaken faith.
From there, their conversation broadens to the subject of correcting a friend in sin. Drawing from Galatians 6:1, Dr. Caldwell explains that when someone is “caught in a transgression,” believers who are spiritual—that is, walking in submission to the Holy Spirit—should restore that person “in a spirit of gentleness.” This requires humility and contentment, not self-righteousness or pride. It also involves recognizing that we ourselves could fall into the same temptation. Christian love compels believers to help others turn from sin, not to judge them harshly but to point them back to the truth of God’s Word.
The discussion also considers fellowship vs. friendship. True Christian friendship cannot be separated from shared faith and truth. Fellowship is deeper than emotional closeness; it is rooted in a common love for Christ, the same Spirit, and the same hope of salvation. A believer’s closest friends should be those who encourage holiness, truth, and devotion to God.
