Have you wrestled with your ability to be patient in trials, in relationships, or maybe waiting for God’s purposes to unfold? Do you find yourself being impatient even over seemingly small things? Patience is not about gritting your teeth and enduring people, problems, pain, and circumstances in your own strength. It is one of the most recognized and yet one of the most difficult fruits of the Spirit to live out in the Christian life. In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, we take an honest and biblical look at what patience really means for followers of Christ, how it is cultivated, and why it is essential to walking in faith. If you find it difficult to exercise patience in this world filled with constant chaos, interruptions, inconveniences, and inefficiencies let this episode encourage you to look more closely at, and meditate on the Scriptures mentioned in the discussion, that you might begin to steadily apply them and grow in the fruit of patience. Dr. Philpot and Dr. Caldwell both affirm that every believer knows the daily struggle of impatience, whether it is with circumstances, people, or even with God Himself as we wait on His timing. The Bible repeatedly teaches that patience is not optional for Christians. From Exodus 34 where God reveals Himself as long suffering toward His people, to Galatians 5 where patience is listed among the fruit of the Spirit, the Scriptures consistently highlight patience as a mark of maturity and faith. Dr. Richard Caldwell reminds us that patience is not just a natural personality trait or a skill we practice on our own. Many Christians wonder if patience can really be developed or if it simply appears once we are saved. Dr. Caldwell explains that while patience is part of the new nature given by the Spirit, so a fruit of salvation, a work of the Spirit in the life of every believer, it is also something we learn and cultivate as we grow in grace. It is about knowing God, trusting Him, and submitting to His will. The Spirit produces patience in those who belong to Christ, and through His Word we learn how to grow in this fruit for the glory of God. To grow in patience is to grow in trusting God, relying on His Word, and aligning our expectations with His truth. It develops through maturity, humility, and submission to the Lordship of Christ. Impatience often reveals that our expectations are misplaced or that we think too highly of ourselves. When we learn to see people and circumstances through the lens of Scripture, we begin to exercise patience more faithfully. Patience is connected to gentleness, kindness, love, and humility. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 2:24 that the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind, patiently enduring evil and correcting opponents with gentleness. In 1 Thessalonians 5:14, believers are urged to admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with them all. These exhortations show that patience is required in every relationship and situation in the Christian life. Whether in ministry, in family, in church life, or in suffering, patience demonstrates the reality of God’s work in us. True patience is not passive. It is an active endurance that is rooted in faith. Psalm 37 reminds us to commit our way to the Lord, to trust in Him, and to wait patiently for Him. Romans 12:12 calls Christians to rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and constant in prayer. Isaiah 40:31 assures us that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles. Far from being weakness, patience is strength because it rests in the sovereignty and goodness of God. Patience requires humility.
