In this episode, we address the biblical reality of wolves in the church and the responsibility of guarding the local flock against their influence. Christians are called to be vigilant and discerning when it comes to wolves among the body of Christ, as both the Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul warned about spiritual wolves in the church. But what do we mean when we speak of wolves in sheep’s clothing; what are wolves in sheep’s clothing? Who are they and how do they infiltrate the body of Christ? Pastor Richard Caldwell explains that these dangerous individuals are often recognized by two distinct characteristics. These are false teachers and false prophets who distort the truth, and who are driven by selfish ambition rather than a desire to glorify God. Learning how to identify a false teacher is critical for every believer. These individuals may wear the garments of a religious leader, but inwardly they are ravenous. True biblical church leadership is marked by selfless service and a commitment to godly shepherding, faithfully watching over and caring for the flock the Lord’s given them. In contrast, false shepherds gather followers unto themselves and bypass the proper authority of the elders. They prey upon the weak and avoid proper channels, setting up their own authority based on emotion rather than the text of Scripture. When you spot the signs of a false prophet, what should you do? The scripture gives clear guidance on how to confront a false teacher biblically. Whether you are dealing with a layperson or confronting a pastor/elder, the process begins with going to the person one on one. The goal is always to win your brother in love, keeping the circle of knowledge as small as possible. If repentance is not found, the matter is brought to the leadership, following the clear pattern of biblical church discipline found in Matthew 18. Guarding the local flock is primarily the calling of God appointed elders, but every church member must exercise true Christian discernment. We must trust the Lord to protect His people rather than living in constant, unloving suspicion of our fellow brethren. It is the local church, not isolated voices on the internet, that is the pillar and support of the truth in the world. Protecting the local church requires a deep commitment to the truth of God's Word by its pastors and elders, all the while knowing that the Lord is the ultimate protector of His church Furthermore, believers must be extremely wary of the dangers of online discernment ministries. Often, those who build platforms by constantly accusing local churches display the very traits they claim to expose. They distort the truth to build an audience and reveal their selfish ambition by directing people away from faithful elders and toward themselves. True discernment drives believers deeper into the life of their local congregation, not away from it. We hope this episode helps you grow in wisdom, truth, and trust in the Lord as He faithfully watches over His people.
