In this episode, Dr. Richard Caldwell examines the dangerous reality of knowing theology without spiritual discernment. What is biblical discernment, and why is it so often missing among those who know the Scriptures best? Many believers are stunned to see biblical scholars, highly educated theologians and pastors, along with well-known voices associated with Christianity make choices that contradict God's Word. Why does this happen? Why do they compromise their convictions when pressured by the world? Why do church leaders fall? The answer is found in the tragic reality of knowing the bible but lacking wisdom in everyday application. Dr. Caldwell explains that true wisdom is cultivated by taking the truth of Scripture and consistently applying the Bible to daily life. It requires us to view all of reality through the lens of God's Word. When we fail to do this, we inevitably witness a severe lack of discernment in the church. This spiritual blindness almost always begins because of pride. There’s a whole lot of knowing that hasn’t translated to application. Intellectual pride in Christianity creates a deceptive environment where the Bible simply becomes another academic subject. Men and women begin loving ideas rather than loving the Lord with all their heart. This arrogance leads to selective obedience to Scripture. Believers might apply the truth where it is convenient but ignore it when it challenges their personal desires or brings painful trials into their homes. This is the danger of theological pride. We must also be deeply wary of the desire for cultural compromise in Christianity. When Christians seek the applause of a dying world, they trade the inerrant authority of Scripture for societal acceptance. This perfectly illustrates the stark contrast of biblical wisdom vs worldly wisdom. Whether it is a seminary professor isolated in an academic echo chamber or a parent dealing with a wayward child, the temptation to soften biblical truth is ever present. How many Christians know how to develop spiritual discernment in a culture that hates the truth? Developing spiritual discernment requires a posture of profound humility and a life of constant dependence on the Lord, His Word, and His Spirit. We must remember that God is the ultimate authority, and we exist to glorify Him through obedience. By remaining anchored in solid reformed theology and biblical doctrine, along with the desire and commitment to faithful Christian living, we can protect our hearts from drifting away from the truth. Faithful expository preaching equips the saints with the truth for a life of service, but that truth is only realized as the individual believer submits to the whole counsel of God. God's truth is not to be studied as merely an abstract concept; it’s meant to be lived out. We must maintain a humble reliance on the Spirit of God to guide our steps and correct our wandering hearts.
