What is spiritual courage, and why does it matter so much in the Christian life? What does it look like to obey God when obedience is difficult, costly, or filled with uncertainty? How can believers remain steadfast when fears, pressures, and personal desires pull them away from faithfulness? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, we turn to the Scriptures to understand the nature of biblical courage. Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explore what the Bible teaches about spiritual courage and the strength God supplies for His people when obedience is hard. Join us as we consider what true courage looks like for the people of God and how He equips His children to obey Him with confidence, clarity, and faith.
Both Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot give thoughtful and practical applications throughout the episode that are grounded in the Bible. Themes that are highlighted include spiritual courage, obedience to God, faithfulness in trials, overcoming fear of man, biblical courage, Christian conviction, standing firm in faith, Christian obedience, and waiting on the Lord. These truths shape how believers respond to difficulty and how they honor Christ in every sphere of life.
The call to be strong and courageous is not a vague motivational phrase. It is a command rooted in the character of God and the truth of His Word. Drawing from Joshua 1, Ephesians 6, and other passages, we see that courage is tied directly to faithfulness to God, submission to His commands, and confidence in His presence. Spiritual courage is not rooted in personality or natural boldness. It is rooted in faith over fear, conviction grounded in the truth, and confidence in what God has revealed.
As the conversation unfolds, real situations are examined that require courage in the different spheres and responsibilities of the Christian life. Examples include that of church leadership, parents, and those of individual believers. Pastors and elders must confront sin and protect the flock even when difficult decisions bring hardship or opposition. Parents must often make difficult choices with their children that run against the grain of the culture. Believers’ must resist the fear of man, the temptation of self-protection, and the desire for ease. These struggles appear in many forms, yet the underlying issue is the same. Will we walk in obedience to God or will we allow fear, convenience, or personal comfort to shape our decisions?
Throughout the episode, we are reminded that courage for the Christian is not impulsive or reckless. Courage requires wisdom. At times the right step is to speak. At other times the right step is to wait on the Lord. Courage is obedient action at the right moment and in the right manner. It involves discernment, humility, prayer, and reliance on the Word of God. The Scriptures teach us to put on the armor of God so that we may stand firm in the strength of His might. This preparation enables us to face trials, temptations, and spiritual battles with clarity and perseverance.
Also considered is how conviction strengthens courage. If the heart is not settled on the authority of Scripture and the fear of the Lord, courage will collapse under pressure. But when we see God rightly and understand our responsibilities before Him, obedience becomes both necessary and nonnegotiable. Whether in the home, the church, the workplace, or personal relationships, Christians are called to stand firm in faith, trusting that God is with them and that His Word is sufficient.
