Stop professing Christ while living like the world. #christianliving #reformed
True belief in the gospel demands a life that reflects its power. We can profess faith with our mouths yet deny it through our daily choices. Sound doctrine is essential and foundational, but if we truly embrace the truth of justification by grace alone, it must visibly transform our behavior. When our lifestyle contradicts our profession, we confuse the true message of Christ. Listen to the full sermon on our YouTube Channel. What are the warning signs of spiritual drift that every believer should watch for? Is it possible to maintain outward religious habits while suffering from spiritual apathy? What does it look like when a Christian is losing their first love for God? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Josh Philpot discuss the subtle and dangerous reality of spiritual drift. They explore how to recognize spiritual drift in your own life and what steps to take when you realize you are not spiritually healthy. If you find yourself wondering, "Am I spiritually unhealthy?", consider listening to this episode it will help you examine the condition of your soul and point you to the Savior who keeps us. Dr. Caldwell clarifies that experiencing a struggle with sin or having a difficult day does not necessarily indicate a drift. However, when a believer gives in to indifference toward God and stops fighting for godliness, this is a serious concern. The danger of spiritual drift often manifests as a lack of affection for Christ despite outward obedience. A Christian may continue their routine of church attendance and Bible study yet experience spiritual dryness where the heart is cold. This indifference often leads to other signs of backsliding, such as cynicism, a critical spirit toward leadership, and isolation from church community. Dr. Caldwell warns that when people drift spiritually, they often seek to distance themselves from those who hold them accountable, which often leads to significant life decisions being made in a state of spiritual weakness. This is a form of spiritual deception, where the individual becomes blind to their own condition, unable able to see their need for guidance and wise counsel. Why does this happen? Does it come due to neglect of spiritual disciplines? Dr. Caldwell argues that the root cause is often a loss of eternal perspective. Referencing 2 Peter 1, he explains that spiritual blindness or nearsightedness occurs when we forget that we are cleansed from our former sins. When we lose sight of the gospel and our future glorification, we become earthbound in our thinking. This lack of Christian spiritual growth is not merely about behavior but about a heart that has forgotten its status as a sojourner and pilgrim. The signs of spiritual decline are symptoms of a deeper issue: we have stopped living in light of eternity. When we forget we are on our way to meet Jesus, the motivation for holiness wanes. How do we fix this? The answer lies in remembering. Dr. Caldwell points to the church at Ephesus in Revelation, which was commended for its labor but rebuked for abandoning their first love. The remedy for signs of spiritual deadness is to remember the height from which you have fallen and repent. We must preach the gospel to ourselves daily, remembering the joy of our salvation and the hope of heaven. This eschatological focus fuels our prayer life and obedience. By being attentive and recognizing the signs of backsliding early, we can turn back to the Lord with renewed zeal and gratitude.

Salvation is entirely the work of God, accomplished through the finished work of Jesus Christ. If righteousness could be attained through obedience to the law, then Christ died needlessly. The law acts as a strict tutor, revealing our utter helplessness and driving us to rely solely on the grace found in the Son of God. True life begins when we die to self reliance. Or does every single believer have the responsibility to share the gospel also? If the great commission is a command to all believers, how are we to go about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ? How much biblical information and training do we need to be effective gospel witnesses? Are there right and wrong ways for us to evangelize? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Josh Philpott and Pastor Richard Caldwell discuss what it means to truly fulfill the Great Commission and make disciples of all nations. They explore the core question that many believers ask: How do you define evangelism? They also discuss how sharing the gospel is a spiritual discipline and what that looks like in a believer’s life. Pastor Caldwell explains that a simple definition of evangelism is to share the gospel in the way God means for it to be shared. This means proclaiming God's good news that is Scripturally accurate, with clarity, and humility. Evangelism specifically focuses on the salvation of sinners through the message of the cross, pointing them to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. While programs like Evangelism Explosion have good intentions and are helpful to people in knowing where to start, believers must be careful not to adopt a rigid, formulaic approach where people are treated merely as projects for self-gratification. True evangelism requires genuine love and compassion for the lost, knowing that God alone has the power to save. Pastor Caldwell affirms that every Christian has a responsibility to evangelize and be a faithful gospel witness in their daily life. However, many believers struggle to engage in a gospel conversation because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing or due to feeling inadequate. To overcome the fear of evangelism, Pastor Caldwell reminds us that you do not need to be a trained apologist to be effective. You simply need to know the word of God and be willing to share your own story of how Christ saved you. We are to go forth sharing this good news with the awareness that God is making an appeal through us as ambassadors for Christ. The gospel has power all by itself, and God often uses ordinary vessels to accomplish His will. The discussion also touches on the proper purpose of the Sunday gathering. Pastor Caldwell points out that the modern church growth movement has often turned the biblical model on its head. The biblical pattern is that the church gathers for corporate worship, edification, and the faithful preaching of the word of God. Then, we disperse to share the gospel with a lost and dying world. We are not meant to gather for evangelism and disperse for discipleship; that is entirely backward to the biblical design. To help believers be more faithful as they seek to share the gospel, Pastor Caldwell shares four keys for effective evangelism. These are prayerfulness which leads to alertness, Scripture saturation, preaching to yourself the realities that you’re going to meet with in any evangelistic encounter, and a willingness to be an instrument of the Lord. Through Scripture saturation, believers are equipped to bring the truth of Christ into any daily interaction, whether at the workplace or the grocery store. God is pleased to use our insufficiency to point to His own sufficiency, bringing glory to His name and expanding His kingdom.

Why Believers Still Confess Sin #theology #truth
The world assumes that total forgiveness removes any reason to avoid sin. The lost man only avoids sin because he fears hell. But the person who has been justified by faith in Christ receives a new heart with new desires. A true believer is characterized by the ongoing confession of sin. We seek this daily cleansing from our Father not to maintain our salvation, but to enjoy unbroken fellowship. These movements claim to be alerting us to spiritual abuse. Is spiritual abuse real? How should Christians think about the claims of spiritual abuse in the church that are so prevalent? Are there truly abusive pastors and church leaders, or is there a fundamental misunderstanding of pastor and elder authority? Recently, on the Straight Truth Podcast we featured a discussion on how one can assess spiritual health. This week, host Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell follow up that discussion with a discussion about church leadership and spiritual abuse. They discuss these difficult questions and help us to think carefully and to be wise and discerning when accusations of spiritual abuse are tossed around. Dr. Caldwell addresses this cultural movement, often linked to hashtags like Me Too and Church Too, where many individuals speak out about abuse and leaving the church. Dr. Caldwell tells us that a major part of this issue is a lack of careful, faithful biblical ecclesiology on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes, church members underestimate the accountability they have to the church and the responsibility their shepherds have to watch for their souls. When pastors ask tough questions about beliefs or behaviors, members might wrongly label this faithful shepherding as abuse. While on the other hand, there is also poor shepherding where pastors do not understand their sphere of authority. Pastoral authority extends only as far as Scripture, and it is a mediated authority under Christ. When leaders overreach into the periphery of people's lives or substitute their own opinions for the Word of God, it leads to domineering attitudes, behaviors, and actions. Does Dr. Caldwell use the term spiritual abuse? Instead of adopting worldly labels or a slapped on a “christianesed” title, he prefers to use biblical terminology rather than terms freighted with cultural outrage. He calls us to look at 1 Peter 5. This passage commands elders to shepherd the flock of God, exercising oversight willingly and eagerly. It strictly warns against lording their authority and leadership or being domineering over those in their charge. Faithful church leadership involves being an example to the flock, carrying out an assignment with humility. The discussion also addresses how these accusations are often male to female. Dr. Caldwell notes that pastors must be above reproach, handling relationships with women in ways that are pure and above board. They should exert great carefulness in all their interactions with women who are not their wives, exercising wisdom and discernment as to leave no room for wrongdoing or accusations. Dr. Caldwell says he doesn’t doubt there have been men in the context of the Lord’s church who haven’t conducted themselves properly towards women in the church, and some of these claims may be true. However, he also points out that our culture attacks masculinity, falsely assuming men are always guilty, neglecting to recognize that women too can be guilty. Sadly, false accusations do happen. It may even be that many who make these claims are unbelievers, seeing as some have gone on to deconstruct their faith, embracing modern deconstruction instead of the truth. Pastors and elders are to lead and model their faith and belief system, by example with love. They are not meant to over involve or overexert themselves in people lives, but when it comes to sin issues within the church, they have a God given responsibility to deal with them. There will be times when a matter arises to the level of church discipline, where pastors and elders that are mature and experienced, will sometimes get things wrong. Members should remember that their pastors are not inerrant and should respond with generosity. Finally, Dr. Caldwell compares true pastoral care with abuse by sharing a passage from Galatians that he just preached on. In Galatians 3 Paul calls the Galatians foolish twice within three verses. Was he being abusive?

Pastors Are Not Inerrant: Give Grace #churchdiscipline #reformed
We suffer today from a severe lack of biblical ecclesiology. Our culture takes secular outrage and places a spiritual label on it, often confusing faithful shepherding with abuse. First Peter 5 commands elders to exercise oversight willingly, not lording their authority over the flock. Yet, when pastors offer biblical reproof, they are frequently met with worldly resistance. Shepherds are not inerrant. The church must measure all things by Scripture and extend grace to mature men of God. What does it mean for a Christian to experience spiritual weariness? Is there a difference between physical exhaustion and spiritual lethargy? How can we find true biblical rest when the daily demands of life leave us feeling heavy laden? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast host, Dr. Josh Philpot brings up Jesus's words from Matthew 1:28-30, asking Dr. Richard Caldwell, what kind of rest is needed for those who labor and are heavy laden. Together they discuss the realities of both physical and spiritual weariness, but they focus in on spiritual exhaustion and aim to help listeners understand what the New Testament has to say regarding rest and about finding our ultimate rest in Christ. Dr. Caldwell explains that God has built rhythms of physical rest into our lives. The times of rest in the Old Testament were meant to point them to worship. As men and women rested from their work, they were meant to remember and acknowledge God as Creator, sustainer, and supplier, trusting Him to provide for them while not working. All those sorts of things were designed by God to point us Godward pointing us toward worship and trusting in Him to care for us. God intends for us as created beings to understand our limitations and recognize our need for rest. Yet in today’s busy world we can easily see how rest can be neglected and we become wearied and weighed down. But before discussing the kinds of rest we need from our labors and burdens, and how we go about overcoming spiritual weariness, Dr. Caldwell explains that we must first understand the different categories of exhaustion. The first is the burden of sin. For those feeling the weight of condemnation, the Matthew 11 rest Jesus speaks of is an invitation to come to Christ, where sins are forgiven and true freedom is found. This brings joyful deliverance from a life estranged from God. Yet, believers also face the temptation to grow weary while on the right pathway. We are commanded not to grow weary in doing good, which requires Christian perseverance and endurance. Dr. Caldwell notes that persecution and endurance in suffering can also threaten to move us off the right path. When experiencing this, we must look away from ourselves, preach the truth to our own hearts, and find our strength in worship. There is also a distinct difference between being weary in the work and weary of the work. Being weary in the work is normal, but being weary of the work is a sign of danger. The answer to this is basic Christian obedience. What happens when weariness is self-inflicted? Dr. Caldwell warns that neglecting daily disciplines like prayer and reading the Word leads to spiritual lethargy. When we stop finding satisfaction in God and instead listen to the world's false promises of satisfaction, our zeal evaporates. No time off, time away, or vacation can fix this internal departure from the right path. The only cure is repentance and renewed obedience, striving to love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. To combat the monotony of daily life, Paul points out in Galatians 6 that we must not give up. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that progressive sanctification is built on eschatology; we must live today with the end in view. When facing a difficult marriage, parenting struggles, or a hard job, our motivation must be to be pleasing to the Lord rather than seeking human praise. By keeping our eyes fixed on Christ as our ultimate rewarder, we can experience true rest for our souls and endure through any season.

How do you go about finding your purpose in this vast world? What happens when a person feels aimless and lacks a sense of purpose and significance? Are we meant to rise to mass notoriety and achieve great things fulfilling some sort of grand destiny, or is there a different path for Christians? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell discuss these profound questions regarding a person's purpose in life. Our modern culture constantly sells a lie in the name of life significance, telling young people that they are special, not ordinary, they have a destiny and need to pursue a life of greatness. But how disillusioning is this when real life sets in, and a person finds themselves working a regular nine to five job or being at home taking care of the home and children? Dr. Caldwell helps us navigate the issues of purpose, sense of destiny, significance and contentment, by looking at what the Bible says about our life's purpose and how we can find joy in the everyday tasks of serving the Lord. Dr. Caldwell points out that to understand our true calling we can look to the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon had everything under the sun, yet he concluded that the end of the matter is to fear God and keep His commandments. This applies to every person. We must realize that the star of the show is not us, but rather, we exist to glorify God. Our purpose is discovered when God is exalted in our lives, whether we are famous or completely unknown. The lies of the culture push us toward self-exaltation, but the Scriptures teach that a meaningful life is found in knowing our Creator through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, and finding our satisfaction in Him. When we understand this, even the most monotonous tasks, like raising children or going to a regular job, hold immense value because they are done for the Lord. We do not need to constantly seek out a grand destiny to fulfill our purpose in life. Instead, God delights in the basic obedience and Christian faithfulness of His people. Furthermore, Dr. Caldwell warns against the danger of comparison. We are on a foolish errand when we compare ourselves to others, as the Lord is the one who judges us. We often underestimate the unseen, reverberating effects of basic obedience over a lifetime. When people leave faithful churches or abandon their responsibilities in search of a greater footprint, they are often driven by a desire for their own glory rather than God's. For the person who feels aimless or defeated by a bad track record, the answer is to start with the basic commandments of Scripture and focus on being faithful today. We must stop looking at the future in some large, overwhelming way and simply focus on the day at hand. A life well spent is one of simple devotion, where ordinary Christians gather with their families, worship together, and strive to honor God. Aiming to glorify God in the everyday moments will lead to the greatest significance and a truly satisfied life.

Find God In The Ordinary! #theology #reformedbaptist
We are given a brief moment on earth, an average of seventy years, to fulfill our highest calling. Our true purpose is not found in the pursuit of worldly significance or personal exaltation. Purpose and calling can be difficult to discern, but Scripture provides a clear, authoritative roadmap for the lives of believers. Many believers struggle deeply with overcoming aimlessness in their daily walk, often asking - What does the bible say about purpose? The foundational truth of Christian living is that we are created to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Whether you are seeking to understand your proper role within your family, or some wise Christan career advice, your primary goal must be to live your life in joyful submission to Christ. This singular aim and devotion is the essential starting point for finding God's will in any specific area of life. In this discussion, Pastor Richard Caldwell addresses the spiritual danger of making arrogant assumptions about our future, with what comes close to a James 4 sermon exposition. He explains that we are commanded to be holding plans with an open hand, continually recognizing the absolute sovereignty of God in decision making. Trusting God's plan means acknowledging that He holds our very breath, and He alone has the right to direct our steps. True biblical purpose in life is found not in rigidly clinging to our own roadmaps, but in yielding completely to the Master's wisdom. For men who are specifically discerning a call to ministry, the biblical requirements and spiritual stakes are even higher. Knowing how to find your calling in this vital area requires careful, honest self-examination. A man must rigorously assess his life against the 1 Timothy 3 qualifications for pastoral character, integrity, and management of his household, allowing for others to do this alongside you also. Knowing how to make biblical decisions regarding vocational church leadership means you cannot walk in isolation. You should never rely solely on internal feelings or look for mystical signs that you are called to preach. Instead, a faithful man must seek the objective wisdom and affirmation of his local church elders. Sound reformed theology and wise biblical counseling consistently emphasize the vital role of the church congregation in validating a man's spiritual giftedness. It takes immense spiritual courage to pursue pastoral work, but submitting your desires to the oversight of godly leaders brings profound clarity and peace. If you desire to grow deeper in your understanding of scripture and sound doctrine, we warmly invite you to subscribe to the Founders Baptist Church channel for more faithful expository preaching.

In this episode, we address the biblical reality of wolves in the church and the responsibility of guarding the local flock against their influence. Christians are called to be vigilant and discerning when it comes to wolves among the body of Christ, as both the Lord Jesus and the Apostle Paul warned about spiritual wolves in the church. But what do we mean when we speak of wolves in sheep’s clothing; what are wolves in sheep’s clothing? Who are they and how do they infiltrate the body of Christ? Pastor Richard Caldwell explains that these dangerous individuals are often recognized by two distinct characteristics. These are false teachers and false prophets who distort the truth, and who are driven by selfish ambition rather than a desire to glorify God. Learning how to identify a false teacher is critical for every believer. These individuals may wear the garments of a religious leader, but inwardly they are ravenous. True biblical church leadership is marked by selfless service and a commitment to godly shepherding, faithfully watching over and caring for the flock the Lord’s given them. In contrast, false shepherds gather followers unto themselves and bypass the proper authority of the elders. They prey upon the weak and avoid proper channels, setting up their own authority based on emotion rather than the text of Scripture. When you spot the signs of a false prophet, what should you do? The scripture gives clear guidance on how to confront a false teacher biblically. Whether you are dealing with a layperson or confronting a pastor/elder, the process begins with going to the person one on one. The goal is always to win your brother in love, keeping the circle of knowledge as small as possible. If repentance is not found, the matter is brought to the leadership, following the clear pattern of biblical church discipline found in Matthew 18. Guarding the local flock is primarily the calling of God appointed elders, but every church member must exercise true Christian discernment. We must trust the Lord to protect His people rather than living in constant, unloving suspicion of our fellow brethren. It is the local church, not isolated voices on the internet, that is the pillar and support of the truth in the world. Protecting the local church requires a deep commitment to the truth of God's Word by its pastors and elders, all the while knowing that the Lord is the ultimate protector of His church Furthermore, believers must be extremely wary of the dangers of online discernment ministries. Often, those who build platforms by constantly accusing local churches display the very traits they claim to expose. They distort the truth to build an audience and reveal their selfish ambition by directing people away from faithful elders and toward themselves. True discernment drives believers deeper into the life of their local congregation, not away from it. We hope this episode helps you grow in wisdom, truth, and trust in the Lord as He faithfully watches over His people. In this episode, Dr. Richard Caldwell examines the dangerous reality of knowing theology without spiritual discernment. What is biblical discernment, and why is it so often missing among those who know the Scriptures best? Many believers are stunned to see biblical scholars, highly educated theologians and pastors, along with well-known voices associated with Christianity make choices that contradict God's Word. Why does this happen? Why do they compromise their convictions when pressured by the world? Why do church leaders fall? The answer is found in the tragic reality of knowing the bible but lacking wisdom in everyday application. Dr. Caldwell explains that true wisdom is cultivated by taking the truth of Scripture and consistently applying the Bible to daily life. It requires us to view all of reality through the lens of God's Word. When we fail to do this, we inevitably witness a severe lack of discernment in the church. This spiritual blindness almost always begins because of pride. There’s a whole lot of knowing that hasn’t translated to application. Intellectual pride in Christianity creates a deceptive environment where the Bible simply becomes another academic subject. Men and women begin loving ideas rather than loving the Lord with all their heart. This arrogance leads to selective obedience to Scripture. Believers might apply the truth where it is convenient but ignore it when it challenges their personal desires or brings painful trials into their homes. This is the danger of theological pride. We must also be deeply wary of the desire for cultural compromise in Christianity. When Christians seek the applause of a dying world, they trade the inerrant authority of Scripture for societal acceptance. This perfectly illustrates the stark contrast of biblical wisdom vs worldly wisdom. Whether it is a seminary professor isolated in an academic echo chamber or a parent dealing with a wayward child, the temptation to soften biblical truth is ever present. How many Christians know how to develop spiritual discernment in a culture that hates the truth? Developing spiritual discernment requires a posture of profound humility and a life of constant dependence on the Lord, His Word, and His Spirit. We must remember that God is the ultimate authority, and we exist to glorify Him through obedience. By remaining anchored in solid reformed theology and biblical doctrine, along with the desire and commitment to faithful Christian living, we can protect our hearts from drifting away from the truth. Faithful expository preaching equips the saints with the truth for a life of service, but that truth is only realized as the individual believer submits to the whole counsel of God. God's truth is not to be studied as merely an abstract concept; it’s meant to be lived out. We must maintain a humble reliance on the Spirit of God to guide our steps and correct our wandering hearts. Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about the testing of our faith when we’re feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by difficult circumstances? Every believer will encounter unexpected hardships in their Christian walk. When these times arise, we often ask what is going on? Why is this happening? Are we being tempted? Or maybe we ask, is God testing us? If so, why does God test our faith? Through an exposition of verses from James 1, Pastor Richard Caldwell provides biblical guidance and wisdom on how to handle Christian trials. We learn that encountering various trials is an inevitable part of Christian living, and, that these challenges have a profound divine intention. God is sovereign over everything, and He orchestrates these events to test the genuineness of our faith and produce endurance. Understanding the James 1 trials and temptations passage, is crucial for every Christian. So then, what does the Bible say about testing your faith? Pastor Caldwell explains there is a difference between the kinds of testing the Bible speaks of and how it speaks about tempting and temptation. There are several places in Scripture where we are called to test and examine ourselves, but this is not what is spoken of here in James 1. James, through the Holy Spirit, speaks of testing that comes from God. And, while God sovereignly brings tests and testing to build our faith, He never tempts us to sin. Temptation comes from Satan and our own fleshly desires. By recognizing this distinction, we can navigate hardships with a clear understanding of Gods purpose for our lives. We are called to cooperate with the Lord, trusting God in hard times to bring about a good result. (see also 1 Peter 1:1-9). One of the most challenging commands in Scripture is to be rejoicing in suffering. However, this does not mean we fake happiness when we are hurting. Rather, finding joy in difficult times is rooted in knowing that God uses the pressure of these times to refine us. This knowledge and process is part of how we achieve spiritual maturity through trials. If we find ourselves lacking in understanding to make decisions in these times, we must seek God for direction. In this very same chapter, God tells us that He generously gives wisdom to those who ask in genuine faith (cf. James 1:5-7). With Christian suffering explained through the lens of God’s Word, we see that enduring faith proves we truly belong to Christ. It is a comfort to know that true believers will persevere and not walk away from the Lord. We must learn how to endure hardship biblically by holding fast to the Word of God and refusing the devilish suggestions to abandon our faith and obedience. Let the testing of your faith result in true spiritual growth and a deeper love for the Savior. We pray that this message has encouraged you. Discover how caring for aging parents reveals a godly heart and is a fundamental test of true Christian piety. What does the bible say about caring for aging parents? When we consider this question, we must look to the New Testament for clear and authoritative instruction. In 1 Timothy 5 family responsibilities are laid out plainly, reminding believers that showing godliness must always begin right at home. True and undefiled religion involves taking care of our own family members first, practicing personal piety before looking to the broader church for assistance. A sound Christian perspective on aging parents recognizes that our mothers and fathers invested deeply in us when we were entirely helpless. Therefore, returning care to parents is not just a weighty obligation, but rather a profound opportunity to express gratitude for God's providential care through them. Even in difficult or regretful family situations, honoring father and mother in adulthood remains a clear, lifelong command that reflects our obedience to the Lord. Many believers genuinely wonder how to treat elderly parents as their physical abilities begin to fade. The Christian responsibility to elderly parents involves much more than simply paying their medical bills or managing their material needs. Dealing with elderly parents decline requires immense patience, deep conversation, and a willingness to truly listen to their struggles. The greatest battle they face in their old age is very often mental and relational, not just financial. When honoring aging parents biblically, we must avoid the arrogant cultural trap of confusing technological familiarity with superior intelligence. Honoring older parents means deeply respecting their life experiences and recognizing that the physical breakdown we witness is simply the outer man decaying, the dying of the body, due to the reality of physical death. The person inside remains exactly the same, created for eternity and deserving of immense, God-honoring dignity. Finally, caring for aging parents acknowledges that older saints still have a vital and ongoing role to play within the family unit. Through sound biblical counseling and devoted intercession, parents can continue to lift up their grown children before the throne of grace every single day. Is a standard online seminary degree a sufficient qualification to shepherd God's people? What is missing from the modern academic approach to theological education? Can a man truly be tested for a call to ministry in a classroom alone? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot is joined by Dr. Richard Caldwell and special guest Jonathon Anderson to discuss a major new initiative at Founders Baptist Church. On the episode today, they introduce listeners to The Pastors Seminary, a church-based seminary designed to train men for future ministry within the context of a local body of believers. If you are a potential seminary student or are simply interested in how the local church should reclaim the task of training leaders, this episode provides a compelling vision for the future. Dr. Caldwell explains that the primary driving force behind this decision is the desire to train the men God has already placed within their own congregation. The goal is to combine a program that is academically formidable with pastoral wisdom, character formation, and life-on-life discipleship. Dr. Philpot mentions that Dr. Caldwell has been at Founders Baptist Church for about 27 years. So why is the church doing this at this time, why now? Dr. Caldwell shares that it has been a long-time desire, but it’s at this current time that the Lord has uniquely equipped Founders Baptist with staff that has the necessary academic credentials, including men with PhDs like Dr. Philpot and Jon Anderson, alongside Dr. Caldwell’s 42 years of pastoral ministry experience and other seasoned pastors. This combination allows for a training environment that offers both deep theology and practical shepherding insight, elements that you can't really get by way of an isolated brick-and-mortar type training. Local church ministry where one is involved, serves, and is intimately known, is often missing at standard bible college, large seminaries, and with online seminaries, and this is really key to the model of The Pastor’s Seminary. The group discusses the limitations of traditional and online seminary models. Dr. Caldwell points out two major cultural issues affecting seminary education today: individualism and anonymity. In many standard educational settings, a student can pass tests and gain intellectual knowledge without ever having their character evaluated or their internal call to ministry tested by others. An online seminary often exacerbates this by isolating the student from the very people they are meant to serve. In contrast, The Pastors Seminary ensures that a student is known, observed, and shepherded by qualified elders who can affirm their gifts. Jon Anderson, who serves as the Academic Dean, outlines the Master of Divinity program. It is a robust 86-credit-hour degree with a heavy emphasis on Biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew) and expository preaching. However, unlike some programs that try to simulate ministry in a classroom, this MDiv trims the artificial practical elements and replaces them with actual service in the church. The belief is that you learn pastoral ministry from pastors, not just professors. Drawing on historical examples like John Wycliffe and John Calvin, the discussion highlights how great movements of God are often tied to faithful pulpits rather than disconnected academic institutions. Jon explains that there is a stewardship of the pulpit at Founders Baptist that is critical, and it is a major strength for The Pastors Seminary. Dr. Caldwell helps to provide a clear understanding of why academic rigor must never be separated or divorced from the love of God’s people. He explains that what a student will get at The Pastors Seminary is that great, rare mixture of academic rigor, but never separated from, never divorced from love for the Lord's church and, the humility that recognizes that we're nothing but shepherds. We desire to help men navigate the questions of calling and giftedness, then add in the training elements necessary to maximize their giftedness for the glory of God and for the good of God's people.

Should Christians fear God in a way that causes them to tremble with terror? What does it mean to fear God if we are also told that God is love? Does the Bible contradict itself when it speaks of the terror of the Lord and yet commands us to have confidence in the day of judgment? Many believers struggle with these questions, wondering, "Am I really saved if I still feel afraid of God's wrath?" This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell discuss the complex and often misunderstood biblical theme of the fear of the Lord. They explore the distinctions between the terror of God's judgment, the reverence due to His name, and the freedom from the fear of man that comes from rightly fearing God. Dr. Caldwell begins by examining the fear that God is due simply because of who He is. Looking at Psalm 90, the discussion centers on God’s power, anger, and holiness. The Psalmist asks, "Who understands the power of Your anger?" The reality is that no human being fully comprehends the magnitude of God’s holiness or the severity of His wrath against sin. In this sense, a fear of God is absolutely appropriate. To meet with the omnipotent Creator in judgment without a mediator is a terrifying prospect, and the fear of punishment is a natural response to the knowledge of one's own sinfulness against a holy God. This biblical fear acknowledges that God is the ultimate judge and that His fury against iniquity is real and consuming. However, Dr. Caldwell clarifies that while this knowledge of God’s holiness is essential, the believer’s relationship to that wrath changes completely through Jesus Christ. This leads to the question: Should Christians be terrified of God? Dr. Caldwell points us to 1 John 4:18, which states that perfect love casts out fear. This passage is not suggesting that we lose our reverence for God, but rather that the cowering, tormenting fear of punishment is removed for those who are in Christ. What does it mean to fear God as a Christian? It means we possess a deep, abiding respect and awe for our Father, similar to the respect a son has for a loving but firm father, but we no longer live in dread of the Great White Throne judgment. We have assurance of salvation because our sins were judged at the cross. Therefore, the judgment day for Christians is not a day of condemnation but a day of evaluation at the judgment seat of Christ for rewards. As believers mature in their faith, they grow in their understanding of God's perfect love. They realize that they are accepted in the Beloved, and this knowledge drives out the anxiety of wondering, "Is God angry with me?" However, the Scriptures also contain severe warnings. Dr. Philpot brings up the Hebrews 10 warning, which speaks of a fearful expectation of judgment for those who go on sinning deliberately. How do we reconcile assurance with these terrifying passages? Dr. Caldwell explains that these warnings are God's means of keeping His true children on the narrow path. A genuine believer hears the warnings of Scripture and heeds them. The fear of the Lord meaning in this context is a healthy caution that keeps us from apostasy. If someone claims to be a Christian but tramples the Son of God underfoot by living in unrepentant sin, they have every reason to fear. But for the true sheep who hear the Shepherd's voice, these warnings serve to drive them back to Christ, deepening their dependence on His grace. Finally, the episode addresses the practical conflict of fear of God vs fear of man. Dr. Caldwell argues that when we rightly fear God, we are liberated from the crippling need to please people. If we are secure in the love of the Sovereign God, who can truly harm us? The fear of man lays a snare, but trusting in the Lord brings safety. When our singular ambition is to please the One who saved us, life becomes wonderfully simple. We do not have to navigate the complex and changing opinions of the world; we simply obey God’s Word. Throughout this fear of God sermon, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot provide a balanced, scriptural perspective that avoids the extremes of irreverence and paralyzing terror. They show us that God’s holiness is infinite and His warnings are serious, yet for the believer, His love is a fortress.

Literal vs Allegorical: The Right Way to Read the Bible

Was Noah’s ark for real? Did the global flood actually happen, or is it merely a myth? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot dive deep into the essential topic of literal vs allegorical interpretation of the Bible and the narratives within. They address a listener's question about a friend who rejects the historicity of accounts like Jonah and the whale and Noah and the ark. This friend views these narratives as symbolic rather than actual events that took place in space and time. Many people today, even some who claim to be Christians, struggle with the miraculous events found in the Old Testament. They prefer to view these accounts as fables or purely symbolic stories meant to convey spiritual truths rather than actual historical facts. Is this an acceptable way to approach biblical interpretation? Can we pick and choose which parts of Scripture are real history and deem others as merely allegorical? Where does this leave us regarding the reliability of God's Word? Join Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot as they discuss why the Bible is literal regarding history and how this impacts our faith. Dr. Philpot opens the discussion by defining the difference between the literal grammatical-historical method and the allegorical method of reading and understanding the Bible. He points out that modern readers often use allegory or symbolism as a means to explain away biblical events they have never seen with their own eyes. Because we do not see people swallowed by giant fish or the entire world deluged by water today, skepticism creeps in. However, Dr. Caldwell asserts that the literal approach is not just the best method, but it is the right way for how to read the Bible. To depart from a literal interpretation of the Bible regarding historical narratives is to depart from the authority of God Himself. The question we must ask is not whether these events fit our modern scientific understanding, but how the Lord Jesus Christ understood them. When we look at Jesus and Jonah or Jesus and the flood, we see that Christ treated them as real, historical realities. So is Jonah and the whale real? Jesus understood it to be a straightforward narrative of a real event. He used Jonah's three days in the belly of the fish as a direct historical sign pointing to His own forthcoming literal bodily resurrection. If Jonah is a myth, the sign of Christ's resurrection is weakened. Dr. Caldwell argues that we must read the Bible the way Jesus and the Apostles read it. They viewed Genesis 6 and the account of Jonah as biblical truth, not fables, but as real historical events. A literal hermeneutic method of reading and understanding is the right way to do Old Testament interpretation. It is how Jesus and the Apostles after Him interpreted them and applied them. If Jesus believed these were real events, who are we to say otherwise? But what about symbols? Is there no place for biblical typology? Dr. Caldwell clarifies that reading the Bible literally does not mean ignoring figures of speech or types. However, valid typology is not based on human imagination or subjective feelings. It is based on divine authority. We know Adam is a type of Christ because the New Testament explicitly tells us so. We know the flood pictures judgment and salvation because Scripture makes that connection. Proper scripture interpretation requires us to let the authors of the Bible determine the meaning. Is the Bible literal? Yes, in its intent. When the Bible uses a type, it provides the indicators within the text itself. Dr. Caldwell warns that hermeneutics based on personal feelings or spiritualizing the text strips the Bible of its power. We want to stand on the Word of God, not our thoughts about the Word of God. When we treat the story of Noah and the ark or the narrative of Jonah as mere myths, we place ourselves above the text rather than under its authority.

In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell address the vital question of how believers are to pursue sanctification without falling into the traps of moralism on one side or quietism on the other. Many Christians find themselves confused when it comes to spiritual growth. Some are taught that sanctification is all about strict rule-keeping, obedience to countless external standards, and working out their faith entirely in their own strength. Others are told to simply “let go and let God,” as if Christian growth requires no discipline, no striving, and no intentional effort. But neither of these extremes represents true sanctification according to Scripture. If you have ever struggled with whether your Christian life is marked by too much striving or too much passivity, this episode will help you find the biblical path of sanctification. Dr. Caldwell explains that sanctification is the ongoing work of God in the believer’s life, a work that involves both divine grace and human responsibility. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 15:10 and Philippians 2:12–13 provide the framework for a proper understanding. On the one hand, Paul declares, “By the grace of God I am what I am,” showing that it is always the grace of God that makes sanctification possible. Yet he also says, “I worked harder than any of them,” demonstrating that Christian obedience requires discipline, faithfulness, and effort. In Philippians, Paul instructs us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, reminding us that God is the one at work in us both to will and to do His good pleasure. These verses teach the balance that defines what our progress in sanctification should be, often referred to as progressive sanctification. Sanctification is not about earning favor with God. Justification has already secured the believer’s right standing with Him. Instead, sanctification is about living out the new life that God has given us, a life rooted in the gospel of grace. This path of sanctification is the Christian’s daily calling, fueled by God’s Spirit and centered on Christ. As we grow in Christ, we pursue holiness and obedience with humility and gratitude, knowing that apart from Christ we can do nothing. True sanctification always begins with the grace of God and flows into obedience that bears the fruit of the Spirit. Dr. Caldwell highlights that Christian growth is both active and dependent. Believers discipline themselves for the purpose of godliness, but always in reliance on God’s grace and strength. Growth in holiness requires spiritual discipline, daily Bible intake, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word. Good, right, and fitting exhortations about obedience, duty, and discipline is not legalism. It is not legalistic to take God’s commands seriously. Obeying God’s Word is part of Christian discipleship and Christian maturity. At the same time, sanctification is not passivity. Quietism, or the idea that we simply sit still and wait for God to sanctify us apart from effort, is not biblical sanctification. God calls us to active Christian faithfulness and grace fueled effort as we walk in submission to Christ. Dr. Caldwell makes clear that obedience and grace are not enemies. Christian maturity comes when believers understand that sanctification is God’s work in us that also calls for our faithful response. We’re not just thinking, we’re acting and we’re not just acting, we’re thinking. Both these things will be present in our lives of worship. This balance keeps us from the errors of moralism and quietism and points us to true sanctification that glorifies Christ.

In John 16, Jesus promised tribulation but assured us of His victory. We must not engage the culture like those who do not know God. True peace is found only in Christ, not in political outcomes. What if that person is a close friend or even a family member? Does the Bible actually command us to have nothing to do with certain people? How does this apply to family gatherings like Thanksgiving or Christmas? Should we distance, disfellowship, and completely separate ourselves from those who are unrepentant in sin? And, if we do this, how do we then go about restoring a fallen brother or sister? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell these difficult questions regarding biblical relationships and boundaries. They discuss several passages in the New Testament where the Apostles command the church to withdraw from those who are walking in unrepentant sin. Join us and listen in to hear how the Bible directs us to navigate challenging relationship issues with discernment and wisdom. Dr. Caldwell explains that while these commands can feel harsh to our modern ears, they are grounded in love and the holiness of God. When the Bible speaks of dealing with sin in the church, it is often describing a form of church discipline. Referencing 2 Thessalonians 3 and 1 Corinthians 5, Dr. Caldwell notes that Paul writes not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person. Dr. Caldwell clarifies that this does not mean we separate from the world. We are called to be lights in the world and to evangelize the lost. However, this command applies to professing believers who are living in open, unrepentant rebellion against God. As a body of believers, we are called to judge those within, with discernment and wisdom. We cannot continue to have Christian fellowship with them as if nothing is wrong. To do so would be to validate their sin and deceive them about their spiritual state. This is what it means to practice biblical wisdom and tough love in the church. But if church discipline becomes necessary, the goal is not to condemn and punish, the goal is to restore. But how does this work practically? What about separating from friends we have known for decades? Dr. Philpot asks if we can still have lunch with a friend who is under discipline or has maybe left the church because of a disagreement over a sin issue. Dr. Caldwell responds, saying that the nature of the relationship, by necessity must change if we care about their soul. You cannot have casual fellowship, talking about sports or the weather, while ignoring the elephant in the room. If you love them, you must love them enough to tell them the truth. The interaction should be focused on calling them to repentance. If they refuse to listen, they are to be treated as an unbeliever, becoming an evangelism project rather than a partner in fellowship. The conversation then turns to the sensitive topic of family boundaries. Dr. Caldwell addresses whether we should invite family members living in sinful lifestyles, such as homosexuality or cohabitation, to family and holiday gatherings. He argues that we must not compromise our testimony or the atmosphere of our home, especially when children are present. We cannot affirm their sin by pretending their relationship is valid. While we should not cut off all contact with estranged family members, and we should seek to share the gospel, there are times when we must draw a line. This helps us in avoiding toxic people, even those family members who might influence our households negatively. Dr. Caldwell also touches on how to handle church conflict involving those who leave the church in anger or slander the leadership. He warns against validating the divisiveness of disgruntled members. Furthermore, the discussion moves to 2 Timothy 3 and the warning to avoid spiritual predators. These are people who have the appearance of godliness but deny its power, often preying on the vulnerable. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that false teachers and those who oppose the truth are to be avoided entirely. In all these scenarios, the goal is not to be mean-spirited but to honor Christ. We cannot act like spiritual issues are nothing.

Why does it feel like we are constantly filled with drama when we look at the news or social media? How do we balance what we see going on in the culture and world around us with how we are meant to participate and live in it? Is it possible to have peace and rest in a world full of unrest? Can Christians be engaged in society without being characterized by irrational extreme behaviors that are fueled by fleshly desires, and anger? How do we deal with all these things without succumbing to fear, anxiety, and discouragement? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell discuss dealing with anxiety about politics and the news. Dr. Philpot observes that whether looking at local events in Texas, unrest in Minnesota, or conflicts in Iran, the world seems filled with chaos. He asks how this aligns with the instructions in the New Testament for Christians for a quiet life, specifically 1 Thessalonians 4, which urges believers to aspire to live quietly, mind their own affairs, and work with their hands. Dr. Caldwell begins by addressing whether the unrest is greater today or if our awareness is simply heightened due to technological advancement. He notes that we are all operating with a false sense of omniscience because of instant camera footage beamed all over the world. However, he also identifies a growing sense of chaos in our culture due to a broader embracing of the doctrine of individualism and narcissism. When everyone is their own god and there is no objective standard, it leads to chaos. Dr. Caldwell argues that finding rest in a world of unrest requires us to look to the Scriptures. He points to the 1 Thessalonians 4 quiet life passage as a reminder that we have a life to live for which we will give an account to God. A part of that life is staying in our lane and being devoted to the responsibilities God has assigned to us. This means we must put blinders on at times to focus on what God has called us to be and do, regardless of the noise around us. However, Dr. Caldwell clarifies that this does not mean we are to live a monkish existence or remove ourselves from the world. We are to be responsible citizens, engaging the world as salt and light, but not in a way that silos us from reality. The question is how to find real peace in a chaotic world while remaining responsible. The conversation turns to John 16:33, where Jesus tells His disciples that in the world they will have tribulation, but to take courage because He has overcome the world. Dr. Caldwell explains that we find our peace in Christ—specifically in His words, His example, and His victory. Jesus warned His disciples in advance so that they would find peace in Him. Similarly, believers today must rely on the unshakable reality that God is sovereign over nations and that the victory has already been won. Dr. Caldwell exhorts listeners not to address the chaos in a way that is fleshly. Even when we agree with a conservative political stance, we must not engage in the culture war like someone who does not know Jesus. If we fight political battles without understanding that the real problem is sin and the real answer is salvation, we miss the boat. The greatest force we can serve is the gospel cause.

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Josh Philpot sit down to discuss these questions on this first episode of the new year. While the world is busy setting weight loss goals or making financial plans, Christians too, think about fresh starts, which often include establishing new spiritual disciplines. But how do we go about making plans and setting goals without being arrogant or presumptuous? How can we find balance and stability when the future is so uncertain? How can we live today while planning and purposing, yet keeping our eternity in view? Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot discuss these new year goals for Christians and whether traditional resolutions are helpful or if there might be a better way to approach a fresh start. Dr. Caldwell explains that while he is not personally driven by resolutions, the concept of a fresh start is biblical and helpful. However, he challenges us to think deeper than just self-improvement. He points listeners to the one ambition that should drive every believer: the knowledge of God. Referencing Philippians 3, he explains that our greatest pursuit is conformity to Christ. For Christians this isn't just a yearly goal but ought to reflect an ongoing daily pursuit of spiritual maturity. The desire to be Christ-like should be the greatest expenditure of our effort. The conversation moves to a discussion regarding James 4 and how we view planning, our resources, and time. The world speaks of planning to go here and there, and doing this or that, even making money and living great lives, but Scripture warns us not to boast about tomorrow because our lives are like a vapor. Dr. Caldwell explains that biblical new year resolutions must always be framed by the understanding that if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that. We cannot presume on the future. To plan without God in view is arrogant and evil. Instead, we are called to hold this life loosely. We must go about our business, making plans, and raising our families while living with eternity in view. A James 4 bible study will help to guide us in this perspective enabling us to shift how we operate in every sphere of life. Dr. Philpot and Dr. Caldwell also discuss the theme of an upcoming yearly conference, held at Founders Baptist Church - The Truth and Love Conference, which focuses on the Pilgrim's Progress and living with an eternal perspective. Dr. Caldwell shares a helpful framework he learned regarding the stages and ages of life: learning, leveraging, and leaving. From 20 to 40, we are learning; from 40 to 60, we are leveraging what we’ve learned; and from 60 onward, we should be focused on leaving a Christian legacy. Whether you are young or old, Christians are called to invest in the next generation. This investment includes parenting advice and how to leave spiritual deposits in your children. The greatest inheritance you can leave is not financial but relational and spiritual. But what about when plans fail? How do we handle the curveballs of life, like a pandemic, job loss, or tragedy? Dr. Caldwell argues that preparing for the unexpected happens in the mundane. It is found in finding purpose in the mundane moments of daily obedience. If we are faithful in the small things, walking on the path of truth every day, we will have the stability to handle the big crises. This involves trusting God in uncertain times by being consistent in the known times. There is nothing truly mundane in the Christian life because every interaction and every moment is an opportunity to worship. This helps us fight spiritual boredom and discontentment.

Beat Spiritual Boredom: Keep Walking in Step #Discipleship #Bible #Faith
The gospel settles our standing with God in Christ, and that certainty strengthens steady obedience. Paul describes maturity as clear-eyed humility, energetic pursuit of Christlikeness, and an eternal focus on the resurrection. The danger is exchanging what is faithful for what is fashionable. Scripture commands steadiness: keep walking in step with the standard already attained. Is It Hateful to Speak Truth? #shorts
Faithfulness to God and faithfulness to souls are never in conflict. The world may perceive biblical truth as hatred, but true love warns of danger rather than affirming a path to destruction. If we see someone driving off a cliff, the loving response is not to compliment their driving but to warn them of the fall. We must be willing to be misunderstood by men to be faithful to the Lord. What does the Bible say about how we should relate to the feelings of others? Is there such a thing as toxic empathy? Can empathy actually be a sin? How should Christians navigate the cultural pressure to affirm the feelings of others when those feelings contradict the truth of Scripture? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss these challenging questions as they explore the biblical definition of compassion and the modern distortion of empathy. Join us for this important conversation on how to maintain a heart of compassion without compromising the truth of God. There is a growing trend in our culture, and even within the church, to elevate empathy above all other virtues. This view suggests that to truly love someone, you must fully identify with their feelings and affirm their perspective, even if that perspective is sinful or destructive. But is this what the Bible calls us to? Dr. Philpot brings up the concept of untethered empathy or what some, like author Joe Rigney, have called the sin of empathy. This is a form of relating to others where a person's feelings become the ultimate moral standard. In this framework, to disagree with someone's feelings or self-perception is seen as hateful. A prime example of this struggle is the current gender identity craze. The world tells us that if we do not use a person's preferred pronouns or affirm their confusion, we lack empathy. However, Dr. Caldwell argues that this approach divorces feelings and emotions from objective truth. Dr. Caldwell explains that true Christian empathy must never be separated from the truth of Scripture. We are called to be tender hearted and to bear one another's burdens, but we are also called to be truthful. Speaking the truth in love means that we care enough about a person to tell them what God says, even if it hurts their feelings in the moment. To affirm someone in their sin is not love. It is actually a form of hatred because it encourages them on a path that leads to destruction. Dr. Caldwell uses the illustration of a person about to driving off a cliff. It is not loving to tell them they are driving nicely; what’s loving is to warn them of the danger, even if they get offended. The discussion also clarifies the difference regarding empathy vs. sympathy. Sympathy and compassion involve caring for someone and suffering with them without losing your footing in the truth. It is like throwing a life preserver to a drowning man rather than jumping in and drowning with him. Dr. Caldwell points to the example of Jesus and the woman at the well. Jesus was kind and engaged with her, yet He did not shy away from addressing her sin, as he spoke with her. He forced her to face the truth, bring her face to face with her sinfulness, even as He graciously, mercifully brings her to the knowledge of Himself. This is godly empathy. Furthermore, the podcast examines the dangers of letting our desire to be liked or our fear of man drive our interactions. Often, what we call empathy is actually self-love and a desire for self-exaltation. We want to be perceived as nice and inclusive. But as Dr. Caldwell points out from the book of Jude, we are to have mercy on some with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh. We must rescue people from the fire, not join them in it. We must define empathy biblically. If we untether our compassion from the Word of God, we compromise our witness and endanger the souls of those we are trying to reach.

When we approach Scripture, we must not let modern skepticism or personal comfort dictate our interpretation. If Jesus and the Apostles viewed Jonah and the Flood as literal historical events, who are we to disagree? To align ourselves with Christ is to accept the Bible on its own terms, recognizing that the historical reality of these events undergirds the very sign of our Lord's resurrection. The release of Satan after the thousand years reveals the depths of human depravity. Even in a perfect environment under Christ's rule, the unregenerate heart chooses rebellion. This demonstrates that external reformation cannot cure the soul; only the grace of God in the new birth can save. Judas stood near Jesus yet perished. What is this millennial kingdom and what is its purpose? Is there a literal one thousand years where Jesus rules on earth, or is the kingdom spiritual in nature, occurring right now? How can we understand it? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the challenging and often debated topic of biblical eschatology found in the book of Revelation. Specifically, they seek to have Revelation 20 explained in a way that is consistent with the rest of Scripture. How we arrive at our positions of end times eschatology, also affects how we read the Bible on a regular basis, this involves hermeneutics. While there have been disputes regarding the millennium throughout church history, Dr. Caldwell affirms that a consistent literal reading of God's Word leads to a specific conclusion. The conversation begins by defining the major views held by evangelicals: premillennialism, amillennialism, and postmillennialism. The core issue separating these views is the timing of the second coming of Christ in relation to the millennium. Amillennialism teaches there is no future literal thousand-year reign, but rather that we are in the kingdom now. Postmillennialism teaches that Christ returns after the millennium, following a widespread advance of the gospel. However, Dr. Caldwell argues for premillennialism, the view that Jesus returns before the kingdom to establish His reign on earth. He explains that this position arises from a consistent, literal hermeneutic. If one takes the Scriptures at face value, acknowledging metaphors where they are obvious but otherwise reading the text plainly, one arrives at a premillennial conclusion. This is vital because the Old Testament is filled with promises regarding a kingdom that have never been fulfilled in Israel's history. A literal reading requires these to be fulfilled in the future, just as the prophecies of Christ's first coming were fulfilled literally. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot discuss the differences in amillennialism vs. premillennialism, noting that amillennialism requires spiritualizing texts that speak of physical realities. They also address postmillennialism, noting that the current state of the world does not reflect a golden age of increasing righteousness. Instead, the Bible predicts a time of difficulty leading up to the return of Christ. The premillennial view aligns with the biblical timeline: the church age, a literal seven-year tribulation period, the return of Christ, and then the 1000-year reign of Christ. A key question arises: who populates this kingdom? Dr. Caldwell explains that the first resurrection occurs at the beginning of the millennium. This includes believers from all ages and those martyred during the tribulation. These saints enter the kingdom in glorified bodies. However, there are also believers who survive the tribulation in their natural bodies. They enter the kingdom, bear children, and repopulate the earth. This explains why there is still death and the need for salvation during the millennium. Even with the binding of Satan, who is cast into the abyss so he cannot deceive the nations during the 1000 years, human beings are still born in sin. The millennium powerfully demonstrates that apart from God's grace, man is totally depraved. Even in a perfect environment with Jesus reigning from Jerusalem, people still need to be born again. Furthermore, Dr. Caldwell addresses the restoration of Israel. He affirms that God is not done with ethnic Israel. In the millennium, God fulfills His covenant promises to Abraham and David.

Why is biblical discernment necessary for every believer, and what dangers arise when we do not test all teaching by Scripture? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot consider the rise of the word of faith movement and the prosperity gospel (a.k.a. as the health and wealth gospel), examining how both movements promote a distortion of Scripture that misleads people about the nature of faith, the character of God, and the Christian life. They show how these teachings have, and gain influence, and why the church must hold fast to the infallible Word of God. This episode serves as a clear and helpful guide for anyone seeking to navigate the confusion created by the prosperity gospel and the errors of the word of faith movement. Dr. Caldwell explains that at the heart of the word of faith movement is a false understanding of faith itself. Instead of presenting faith as trust in the God who has revealed Himself in the Scriptures, this movement teaches that faith is a force, something activated through spoken words to bring about desired outcomes. This emphasis on the supposed power of speech leads many to believe that God wants all Christians to be healthy, wealthy, and prosperous and that these blessings can be claimed if one simply speaks the right words. Dr. Caldwell shows how such claims ignore biblical authority and fail to interpret Scripture in context. Passages are taken out of their historical and biblical settings, resulting in teachings that contradict the clear witness of the Bible. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Caldwell presents a faithful biblical view of faith, God, the gospel, and the Christian life that’s rooted in biblical inerrancy and sound biblical hermeneutics. He reminds listeners that God has spoken with clarity and finality in His Word and that all teaching and preaching must be tested by Scripture. Christians must learn how to apply the Bible rightly by paying careful attention to context, literary structure, authorial intent, and the unity of the Scriptures as a whole. When believers commit themselves to expository teaching and a right handling of the Word of God, they are protected from error and strengthened in biblical and gospel truths. Dr. Caldwell also highlights the importance of being part of a Word centered church where healthy doctrine shapes worship, ministry, and Christian living. A church grounded in Scripture is equipped to confront error, shepherd God’s people, and stand firm in the truth. Dr. Caldwell explains that the Scriptures warn believers about the dangers of greed, covetousness, and the love of money, and that the prosperity gospel stands at odds with the heart of genuine Christian discipleship. God does not promise worldly wealth to His people. Instead, He calls them to take up their cross, follow Christ, and treasure Him above all earthly gain.

What does it look like to obey God when obedience is difficult, costly, or filled with uncertainty? How can believers remain steadfast when fears, pressures, and personal desires pull them away from faithfulness? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, we turn to the Scriptures to understand the nature of biblical courage. Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explore what the Bible teaches about spiritual courage and the strength God supplies for His people when obedience is hard. Join us as we consider what true courage looks like for the people of God and how He equips His children to obey Him with confidence, clarity, and faith. Both Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot give thoughtful and practical applications throughout the episode that are grounded in the Bible. Themes that are highlighted include spiritual courage, obedience to God, faithfulness in trials, overcoming fear of man, biblical courage, Christian conviction, standing firm in faith, Christian obedience, and waiting on the Lord. These truths shape how believers respond to difficulty and how they honor Christ in every sphere of life. The call to be strong and courageous is not a vague motivational phrase. It is a command rooted in the character of God and the truth of His Word. Drawing from Joshua 1, Ephesians 6, and other passages, we see that courage is tied directly to faithfulness to God, submission to His commands, and confidence in His presence. Spiritual courage is not rooted in personality or natural boldness. It is rooted in faith over fear, conviction grounded in the truth, and confidence in what God has revealed. As the conversation unfolds, real situations are examined that require courage in the different spheres and responsibilities of the Christian life. Examples include that of church leadership, parents, and those of individual believers. Pastors and elders must confront sin and protect the flock even when difficult decisions bring hardship or opposition. Parents must often make difficult choices with their children that run against the grain of the culture. Believers’ must resist the fear of man, the temptation of self-protection, and the desire for ease. These struggles appear in many forms, yet the underlying issue is the same. Will we walk in obedience to God or will we allow fear, convenience, or personal comfort to shape our decisions? Throughout the episode, we are reminded that courage for the Christian is not impulsive or reckless. Courage requires wisdom. At times the right step is to speak. At other times the right step is to wait on the Lord. Courage is obedient action at the right moment and in the right manner. It involves discernment, humility, prayer, and reliance on the Word of God. The Scriptures teach us to put on the armor of God so that we may stand firm in the strength of His might. This preparation enables us to face trials, temptations, and spiritual battles with clarity and perseverance. Also considered is how conviction strengthens courage. If the heart is not settled on the authority of Scripture and the fear of the Lord, courage will collapse under pressure. But when we see God rightly and understand our responsibilities before Him, obedience becomes both necessary and nonnegotiable. Whether in the home, the church, the workplace, or personal relationships, Christians are called to stand firm in faith, trusting that God is with them and that His Word is sufficient.

Why is persecution against believers rising across Africa? What does the Bible say about suffering, martyrdom, and being faithful unto death? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the growing crisis of Christian persecution in Nigeria and how the church should respond with faith, courage, and biblical hope. This episode offers a sobering and powerful reminder that faith under fire is never wasted. The global church suffering testifies to the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord over all, and that nothing can separate believers from His love. Whether in Nigeria, in America, or anywhere else in the world, Christians are called to remain steadfast, rejoicing that to live is Christ and to die is gain. If you want to understand how Scripture explains God’s sovereignty in suffering and how the church can remain faithful amid hostility, this episode will strengthen your confidence in the Word of God and deepen your compassion for persecuted believers. Reports show that thousands of Nigerian Christians are being killed every year by Islamic extremist groups. Churches are burned, families displaced, and entire communities destroyed. Yet, in the midst of this darkness, Christians continue to gather for worship, proclaiming Christ with boldness. What drives this faith under such pressure? What gives believers the strength to remain faithful when facing the threat of death? Scripture gives the answer: our faith rests not in our circumstances but in the sovereignty and goodness of God. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that persecution is not new. From the earliest days of the church, believers have suffered for their loyalty to Christ. The Apostle Peter tells us, “Do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you.” The suffering of Christians, whether in Nigeria or anywhere in the world, is part of God’s sovereign plan for His glory and the refinement of His people. Through suffering for Christ, the truth of the gospel shines brighter, revealing that salvation is real and that the grace of God sustains His people even through death. The conversation explores how persecution reveals both the hatred of the world toward God and the unshakable hope of believers. When the world attacks the church, it is ultimately venting hatred toward Christ Himself. Yet even then, the Lord uses these trials to advance the gospel. As Dr. Caldwell explains, what Satan intends for evil, God uses for good. In the blood of the martyrs, the seed of the church continues to grow. Martyrdom in Nigeria and across the world demonstrates that the gospel cannot be silenced. Dr. Philpot and Dr. Caldwell also address the rise of Islamic extremism in Africa and its influence spreading across Europe and even into the United States. While Islam claims to honor one God, its denial of Jesus Christ as Lord reveals that it is not the same faith. The hatred toward believers and the rejection of the gospel expose the spiritual opposition between the kingdom of Christ and the kingdom of darkness. Yet, the Bible calls Christians to respond not with hatred but with compassion and truth, praying for the salvation of their persecutors and standing firm in grace. What should believers do when they see their brothers and sisters suffering? Scripture calls us to pray, to support, and to bear one another’s burdens. Dr. Caldwell urges Christians to intercede for those facing persecution, to speak publicly on their behalf, and to give materially where possible. Above all, we are to prepare our own hearts for trials by believing and obeying God’s Word. If we cannot endure small tests of faith, how will we stand when the greater trials come?

From our earliest years, many of us have struggled with how we see ourselves, whether it is physical appearance, social comparison, or personal worth. Culture constantly tells us that our value depends on what we look like, what we own, or how successful we are and how we appear to others. But God’s Word gives us a radically different message. Do you struggle with insecurity, self-worth, ever compared yourself to others, or questioned how God views you, if so, then this conversation will help you think biblically and find real freedom and peace in Christ. Dr. Caldwell’s counsel calls believers to turn away from self-focus and toward a Christ-centered life that treasures the Lord above all else. Dr. Caldwell begins by explaining that image and insecurity are not merely surface issues. They reveal what we truly believe about God and about ourselves as His creation. The Bible teaches that humanity was made in the image of God, which gives every person dignity, purpose, and worth. Yet in a fallen world, that image is marred by sin. As a result, people measure themselves by worldly standards, becoming trapped in comparison and envy, and enslaved to self-loathing thoughts. The solution, Dr. Caldwell says, is not found in worldly psychology or self-esteem exercises but in returning to a biblical understanding of who we are in Christ. Faith, he explains, is not believing in ourselves but, believing God and taking Him at His Word. Biblical identity begins by recognizing that our worth in Christ comes from God’s sovereign design and redemptive love. Christians must learn to view themselves as God does—beloved, redeemed, and purposefully created. This means understanding that God is sovereign over every detail of our lives, including our appearance, abilities, and circumstances. Our height, hair color, family background, and even physical limitations are all under His providence. When believers grasp this truth, they can embrace who they are, knowing that God made them intentionally and lovingly. Dr. Caldwell also warns against a distorted humility that denies human worth. While Scripture reminds us that we are nothing apart from God, it also reveals that we are valuable because He made us in His image and redeemed us through His Son. To think biblically about self-worth is to see our identity through the lens of creation and new creation. The believer’s confidence and peace are not found in self-praise but in resting in God’s sovereign goodness. Another aspect discussed in the episode is the danger of being a man pleaser rather than a God pleaser. When we live to impress others or measure ourselves by worldly standards, insecurity and discontent will rule our hearts. Comparing ourselves with others—whether in beauty, success, or possessions—always leads to pride, jealousy, or despair. The apostle Paul warns that those who compare themselves among themselves are not wise. The answer, as Dr. Caldwell explains, is to fix our eyes on Christ and live for the glory of God. The conversation also turns to the way men and women experience insecurity differently. Women often wrestle with outward body image concerns, asking, “How do I look?” while men tend to struggle with performance-based questions like, “How did I do?” Both reflect misplaced identity when detached from God’s truth. Dr. Caldwell observes that today’s feminized culture confuses gender roles and blurs God’s design. Many men grow up without strong, godly fathers to model biblical masculinity, leading to emotional confusion and insecurity. The church, he says, must call men to think and live as men according to Scripture, and encourage women to cultivate inner beauty that honors Christ rather than external beauty that fades.

How do these hidden sins take root in the heart, and what makes them so destructive to the Christian life? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss one of the most overlooked yet spiritually deadly struggles that believers face every day—jealousy and envy. Have you ever compared your life, success, or relationships with others and contemplated things in “the grass is so much greener” kind of way? These are times where we are most likely being tempted towards jealousy and envy. And if we are not careful and diligent, they can take root, bringing about deep dissatisfaction with everything and everyone. If you have thought about, dwelt on or maybe even given voice to things in these ways, you’ll find that this episode offers biblical wisdom to help you find freedom from these sins. Watch as Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot unpack the Scriptures to expose the true nature of jealousy and envy and point us toward the only cure: a heart fully satisfied in Christ. Jealousy and envy are often seen as small, private emotions, but Scripture reveals that they are far more serious. They are sins of the heart that reveal discontentment, idolatry, and a lack of trust in God and His plans. The Bible warns that “where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice” (James 3:16). These sins are not minor flaws in character but reflections of the flesh, not the Spirit. In Galatians 5, jealousy and envy are listed among the works of the flesh, contrasted with the fruit of the Spirit. Those who walk by the Spirit put these sins away, replacing them with love, joy, peace, and contentment. Dr. Caldwell explains that envy desires what someone else has, while jealousy resents that someone else has it. Both flow from a heart that is dissatisfied with the will of God. They are rooted in unbelief—an unwillingness to rest in the Lord’s sovereignty and to trust that He has wisely ordained every circumstance of our lives. Jealousy and envy say, “God has not been fair to me.” But faith says, “The Lord knows what is best for me.”' When we struggle with jealousy or envy, we are not merely comparing ourselves to others; we are questioning God Himself. These sins produce bitterness, discontentment, and a heart that cannot rejoice with those who rejoice. Covetousness is idolatry, and idolatry always places something or someone in the position that belongs to God alone. As Dr. Caldwell notes, this is why jealousy and envy destroy relationships—they drive wedges between believers, families, and even within the church. So how do we overcome jealousy and envy? The biblical answer is clear: we must walk by the Spirit. When our hearts are filled with the truth of Scripture, when we cultivate gratitude and thanksgiving, jealousy and envy cannot thrive. The Christian life is not about attaining what others have but about becoming who God is shaping us to be—conformed to the image of His Son. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that we must trust God’s plan, submit to His will, and rejoice in His goodness, even when our circumstances are not what we would have chosen. In this episode, Dr. Caldwell shows that true Christian sanctification involves putting off jealousy and envy and putting on love. Love does not envy, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13, and only the love of God poured out by the Holy Spirit can free us from these sins.

How do Christians build godly relationships that honor Christ while still confronting sin with humility and love? Is there a difference between friendship and fellowship in the church? And how should believers respond when a close friend or even a spouse begins to drift into ungodly behavior? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot unpack what Scripture teaches about friendship, accountability, and love within the body of Christ. Do you struggle with balancing truth and grace in your relationships, or how to form friendships that truly glorify God, this conversation offers a deeply biblical perspective. Watch, consider, and reflect, on how to love, correct, and grow together in your relationships through applying and living out the truth of God’s Word. Right at the start a heartfelt but practical question is asked about concerns between those who should be the closest of friends: what should a Christian wife do if her husband begins to spend time with people who engage in ungodly behavior? Does speaking up mean she is usurping his role as leader in the home? Dr. Caldwell explains that biblical submission is not silence. A godly wife, out of love for her husband and obedience to God, has the right and the responsibility to raise spiritual concerns. First Peter 3 encourages a humble and reverent spirit that trusts God while also speaking truth with love. A Christian wife’s gentle correction can serve as a great help to her husband’s soul and to the health of their marriage. Throughout the podcast, Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot discuss how Christian friendship is not just about companionship or shared interests but about mutual growth in holiness and spiritual maturity. The Bible calls believers to walk together in truth and spiritual growth, helping one another live in obedience to Christ. This includes loving correction when a brother or sister falls into sin, accountability in the church, and choosing friends wisely who help strengthen rather than weaken faith. From there, their conversation broadens to the subject of correcting a friend in sin. Drawing from Galatians 6:1, Dr. Caldwell explains that when someone is “caught in a transgression,” believers who are spiritual—that is, walking in submission to the Holy Spirit—should restore that person “in a spirit of gentleness.” This requires humility and contentment, not self-righteousness or pride. It also involves recognizing that we ourselves could fall into the same temptation. Christian love compels believers to help others turn from sin, not to judge them harshly but to point them back to the truth of God’s Word. The discussion also considers fellowship vs. friendship. True Christian friendship cannot be separated from shared faith and truth. Fellowship is deeper than emotional closeness; it is rooted in a common love for Christ, the same Spirit, and the same hope of salvation. A believer’s closest friends should be those who encourage holiness, truth, and devotion to God.

These familiar Christian clichés have been repeated for generations in prayers, sermons, and everyday conversations. But have we ever stopped to ask whether these popular sayings are actually biblical? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot and Pastor Richard Caldwell take a close look at some of the most common Christian sayings to uncover what Scripture thoughts lie behind them. Join us as we explore why these cliches should never replace the authority of Scripture and to learn how we can replace a cliché kind of faith with a robust understanding of biblical truth. Discover how truth in love and growing in faith come from knowing God’s Word deeply and applying it to every part of life. Many of these phrases—while sounding spiritual—can lead to a shallow theology if they are not grounded in the Word of God. Dr. Caldwell explains that while Christian cliches often express a desire to affirm biblical truth, they can sometimes replace deeper reflection on biblical truth itself. Phrases like God is in control or Love the sinner, hate the sin may summarize important principles, but if they are used carelessly, they can distort understanding scripture and reduce faith to a collection of slogans. For example, when people say God works in mysterious ways, they often mean that God’s purposes are beyond human understanding. While that is true in one sense, the Bible also reveals much about God’s character and His plans through His Word. The problem arises when these sayings substitute for real engagement with sound doctrine and spiritual maturity. We don’t want to let these clichés be replacements for a robust understanding of the Word of God. Pastor Caldwell warns that the danger of shallow theology is to allow these sorts of soothing and comforting words to take the place of genuine biblical understanding and discernment. The discussion also explores how sayings like Let go and let God have been misunderstood. While it is right to trust in God’s sovereignty, the Christian life is not passive. Sanctification is an active partnership in which believers depend on the Lord while striving in obedience. The hosts remind us that faith and truth are inseparable, and that applying scripture correctly requires us to think deeply about what God has said rather than relying on cultural expressions of faith. Another popular phrase examined is God will not give you more than you can handle. This statement is loosely inspired by 1 Corinthians 10:13, but it is often taken out of context. Dr. Caldwell clarifies that the verse speaks about temptation, not suffering. God may allow us to face trials that are far beyond our strength so that we learn to depend completely on Him. In this way, faith grows stronger when we stop trusting in ourselves and rest fully in the Lord’s sustaining power. Other cliché’s discussed in this episode are Love the sinner, hate the sin and When God closes one door He opens another (or maybe: He opens a window). Both expressions contain kernels of truth, yet they can be misused when detached from the biblical truth they attempt to summarize. We cannot replace God’s Word by summarizing them into short simple statements; they just aren’t equal. As believers, our goal is not to rely on these catchy sayings but to cultivate spiritual maturity through careful study of God’s Word. Throughout the discussion, Dr. Caldwell emphasizes that true faith is not about repeating memorized lines but about knowing and believing what God has actually said.

Have you wrestled with your ability to be patient in trials, in relationships, or maybe waiting for God’s purposes to unfold? Do you find yourself being impatient even over seemingly small things? Patience is not about gritting your teeth and enduring people, problems, pain, and circumstances in your own strength. It is one of the most recognized and yet one of the most difficult fruits of the Spirit to live out in the Christian life. In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, we take an honest and biblical look at what patience really means for followers of Christ, how it is cultivated, and why it is essential to walking in faith. If you find it difficult to exercise patience in this world filled with constant chaos, interruptions, inconveniences, and inefficiencies let this episode encourage you to look more closely at, and meditate on the Scriptures mentioned in the discussion, that you might begin to steadily apply them and grow in the fruit of patience. Dr. Philpot and Dr. Caldwell both affirm that every believer knows the daily struggle of impatience, whether it is with circumstances, people, or even with God Himself as we wait on His timing. The Bible repeatedly teaches that patience is not optional for Christians. From Exodus 34 where God reveals Himself as long suffering toward His people, to Galatians 5 where patience is listed among the fruit of the Spirit, the Scriptures consistently highlight patience as a mark of maturity and faith. Dr. Richard Caldwell reminds us that patience is not just a natural personality trait or a skill we practice on our own. Many Christians wonder if patience can really be developed or if it simply appears once we are saved. Dr. Caldwell explains that while patience is part of the new nature given by the Spirit, so a fruit of salvation, a work of the Spirit in the life of every believer, it is also something we learn and cultivate as we grow in grace. It is about knowing God, trusting Him, and submitting to His will. The Spirit produces patience in those who belong to Christ, and through His Word we learn how to grow in this fruit for the glory of God. To grow in patience is to grow in trusting God, relying on His Word, and aligning our expectations with His truth. It develops through maturity, humility, and submission to the Lordship of Christ. Impatience often reveals that our expectations are misplaced or that we think too highly of ourselves. When we learn to see people and circumstances through the lens of Scripture, we begin to exercise patience more faithfully. Patience is connected to gentleness, kindness, love, and humility. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 2:24 that the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind, patiently enduring evil and correcting opponents with gentleness. In 1 Thessalonians 5:14, believers are urged to admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with them all. These exhortations show that patience is required in every relationship and situation in the Christian life. Whether in ministry, in family, in church life, or in suffering, patience demonstrates the reality of God’s work in us. True patience is not passive. It is an active endurance that is rooted in faith. Psalm 37 reminds us to commit our way to the Lord, to trust in Him, and to wait patiently for Him. Romans 12:12 calls Christians to rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and constant in prayer. Isaiah 40:31 assures us that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles. Far from being weakness, patience is strength because it rests in the sovereignty and goodness of God. Patience requires humility.

The death of Charlie Kirk and the massive response to his memorial have left a lasting impression on both Christians and the wider culture in America. With an audience of over 100,000 gathered in person and millions more watching online, the service was a cultural and spiritual moment that cannot be ignored. If you watched live or have now seen the recorded Charlie Kirk Memorial Service and want to think clearly and biblically about its cultural and spiritual significance, and the lessons we as Christians can learn, this is an episode you will not want to miss. Join us as we consider the takeaways, lessons, and reflections from the Memorial for Charlie Kirk, and be reminded of the unchanging truth of God’s Word in and through every season of life. In this episode, Dr. Caldwell shares thoughtful reflections on the Charlie Kirk Memorial and what it means for Christians to interpret such events through the lens of Scripture. While the service included heartfelt tributes and speeches from major government leaders, it also raised significant questions about the gospel message, faith, and the role of Christianity in public life. Some of the speeches included powerful mentions of Jesus Christ, the cross, and the resurrection. Yet as Dr. Caldwell explains, a closer look reveals that not every presentation of the gospel given during the Charlie Kirk memorial service was biblically clear; a lot of the gospel presentations were mixed. He further explains that the gospel is not just about relaying and acknowledging facts. The gospel is message of good news of salvation through Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone. A central highlight of the memorial came through Erica Kirk, Charlie’s widow. Her powerful, gripping, and emotional words of forgiveness toward her husband’s killer stunned and moved the audience. Dr. Caldwell explains why her response was a uniquely Christian demonstration of strength and obedience to Christ. Forgiveness does not erase justice, nor does it overlook evil. Instead, it shows the supernatural work of the Spirit of God in the believer’s life. The contrast between Erica Kirk’s response and the political rhetoric of others at the memorial service helps us better understand what true Christian faith looks like when lived out in public. As we consider the takeaways from the memorial for Charlie, Dr. Caldwell reminds us of both the positive and concerning elements. On the positive side, to hear leaders of the nation speak openly about Charlie’s faith in Christ, to witness such a public acknowledgement of the gospel, and to see so many impacted by his life and testimony is remarkable. Yet we must also exercise discernment. Mixtures of truth and error, common in civil religion and cultural Christianity, can distort the message of salvation. This episode underscores the importance of protecting the gospel from being blended with works, moralism, or vague notions of God that are not rooted in Scripture. The impact of Charlie Kirk’s memorial service on America remains to be seen, but it certainly was a cultural moment of significance. Could God use this event to spark genuine conversions and even revival? Dr. Caldwell urges Christians to remain hopeful, to rejoice in God’s providence, and to pray that the Lord will bring many to true salvation.

What can we say, or do as we watch and listen to people who are responding to this heinous act in massively different ways? In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot and Dr. Richard Caldwell take time to reflect on the Charlie Kirk murder, the aftermath of this tragedy, and the important question many are asking: Was Charlie Kirk a martyr for his Christian faith? Charlie Kirk was widely known for his political influence and cultural engagement, but he was also a man whose confidence was grounded in the gospel message of salvation in Christ. In his public interactions, he tied his political viewpoints to his Christian worldview. He consistently testified that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. As you watch this episode, you will be encouraged to think biblically about justice, righteousness, and the sovereignty of God. You will also be reminded of the call to remain bold, faithful, and gospel-centered in a world that increasingly opposes the truth. Whether wrestling with righteous anger over the death of Charlie, reflecting on the cost of discipleship, or praying for Charlie Kirk’s family, this episode provides biblical clarity and pastoral wisdom for the days ahead. As Dr. Caldwell explains, Charlie Kirk’s clear stand for biblical truth makes Charlie Kirk’s death more than a political tragedy. It raises the question of whether Charlie Kirk is an example of modern martyrdom today. The conversation explores the depth of what it means for the church to process events like this. So, what should the Christian response to the vicious death of Charlie Kirk look like? How do we balance righteous anger with the biblical warning to be angry and not sin? Dr. Caldwell explains that the anger we feel at the Charlie Kirk tragedy can be righteous when it reflects the heart of God against sin and injustice. Yet it becomes sinful when it turns toward bitterness, vengeance, or despair. He reminds listeners that vengeance belongs to the Lord and that even in the darkest of moments, God remains sovereign over life, death, and justice. Throughout the episode, Dr. Caldwell identifies how Charlie Kirk’s Christian faith was inseparable from his public witness. His courage and outspoken boldness were rooted in his belief of the gospel. Charlie Kirk’s willingness to face opposition displayed a kind of Christian integrity and influence that pointed beyond himself to Christ. For this reason, the podcast asks whether it is right to understand his murder as an act of Charlie’s faith under attack. The hosts make the case that when a believer is targeted not simply for political opinions but for standing upon the truth of God’s Word, that believer’s death bears the marks of martyrdom. The discussion also engages with the troubling responses to Charlie Kirk’s murder across the internet and in the media. Some have mocked Charlie Kirk, some Charlie Kirk’s family, while others have rejoiced over and celebrated his death. Dr. Caldwell highlights how these reactions display the depravity of humanity when left unrestrained by God. He contrasts this with the Christian call to pray for enemies, love those who persecute us, and trust in the Lord for justice for Charlie Kirk. This episode also addresses the broader cultural and political climate that shaped the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The evidence points to political violence around Charlie Kirk being fueled by left leaning radicalized ideology.

Fear God as a Father, Not a Judge #theology
When a believer feels the weight of God's discipline, it is not the wrath of a judge seeking to destroy. It is the love of a Father seeking to restore. The anger of God toward His children is not destructive but productive and developmental. We no longer fear the Lord with the cowering trepidation of a criminal facing a sentence of hell. Christ has paid that debt. Instead, we offer God the reverence of a son who trusts his Father's wisdom and dreads nothing more than displeasing Him. They revisit the biblical command to "wait for the Lord," found in passages such as Psalm 27:14 and Psalm 31:24, which encourage believers to be strong and let their hearts take courage. Yet, many Christians struggle to understand what this looks like in practice. Does waiting mean we become passive observers of our own lives, paralyzed until we receive a supernatural sign? Or does biblical waiting involve taking initiative, making big decisions, and exercising human responsibility while trusting in God's sovereignty? Dr. Caldwell answers these questions, defining waiting not as a passive state but as a dynamic "faith exercise" where the believer is actively engaged in trusting and obeying God. He explains that waiting on God is never an excuse for laziness or spiritual inactivity. Instead, it involves preaching truth to our own hearts about God's character—reminding ourselves that He is sovereign, loving, and always at work for our good, even when we cannot see the immediate results. Using Psalm 37 as a guide, the discussion highlights the command to "rest in the Lord" and "do not fret" over the schemes of wicked men. True biblical waiting means we continue doing what is right and walking in obedience, fully convinced that those who wait for the Lord will inherit the land. This is active waiting, where the believer fights the battle of faith by clinging to the promises of Scripture while navigating the difficulties of life. The conversation then moves to the complex area of Christian decision-making. How do we wait on the Lord when we have to choose whether to buy a home, change careers, or propose marriage? Dr. Caldwell points out that the Bible does not always give us a specific verse for every judgment call that we will face. In these moments, we must rely on biblical wisdom and the general principles of Scripture. If a believer is delighting themself in the Lord and their life is submitted to His Word, they can trust the desires God has placed in their hearts. Dr. Caldwell references Philippians 2:12-13 to show that God works in us "both to will and to work for His good pleasure," meaning He aligns our desires with His will as we seek Him. Therefore, taking action toward a godly desire—such as marriage—is not a lack of faith, but a demonstration of trusting God with your future. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpott also discuss specific scenarios in which the tension between human responsibility and God's sovereignty can cause us to feel paralyzed. When faced with the need to make decisions, we often question ourselves about human responsibility vs. God’s sovereignty. For instance, if a man is unemployed, should he wait for the "perfect" job or take action to provide for his family immediately? Dr. Caldwell asserts that a man cannot claim to be waiting on the Lord while violating the biblical command to care for his household. In this case, waiting on the Lord might look like taking a difficult, less desirable job to fulfill his God-given responsibilities. This illustrates that taking action while waiting on God is often the very definition of obedience. The episode concludes with a look at justice and forgiveness, encouraging believers to release personal offenses to God, who is the ultimate judge. By doing so, we prove that we are trusting God's timing and His perfect justice. To navigate these situations with biblical wisdom, Christians must be saturated in the Word of God, ready to apply truth to every season of waiting.

Jesus Plus Nothing #gospel #faith Is Your Gospel True? #theology The Danger of Works
To depart from the gospel of grace is to depart from God Himself. Paul’s amazement in Galatians 1 is not just at a shift in doctrine, but at a desertion of the One who called us. When we add human merit or religious performance to the finished work of Christ, we do not merely improve the message; we destroy it. A distorted gospel is no gospel at all, and it brings no salvation. We must hold fast to justification by faith alone. Listen to the full sermon on our YouTube Channel. Love Warns the Sinner #shorts #truth
True friendship does not turn a blind eye to spiritual destruction. When a brother or sister walks in open rebellion, we cannot share casual fellowship as if nothing is wrong. To do so is to affirm their darkness. Biblical love compels us to address the sin rather than act indifferent to it. We must warn them as a brother, valuing their eternal soul more than the temporary comfort of the relationship. To ignore their sin is to aid in their ruin. What lies at the root of such horrific events? Often, the talk around such tragedies focuses on gun violence, the home life, and possible mental health issues of the perpetrator, but neglects to consider the spiritual aspects or the spiritual roots of such. Is there a link between the transgender movement and violent actions? How should Christians respond to news of the transgender shooter in Canada? This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the recent tragedy in British Columbia, Canada, where a young man who identified as a female killed his mother, stepbrother, and others at a school. Several media reports have obscured the truth by referring to the shooter as a woman and calling the young man “her”, but Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot examine this way of thinking and speaking through the lens of Scripture. They discuss how a culture that embraces gender ideology and rejects God's design is embracing what the Bible calls earthly, natural, demonic wisdom. In James 3, the Bible distinguishes between wisdom from above and wisdom that is earthly, natural, and demonic. Dr. Caldwell explains that this false wisdom characterizes all of humanity outside of Christ. It is not limited to one specific group but is the state of the natural man. However, when a society collectively encourages a delusion, such as the transgender movement, it leads to disorder and every evil thing. The recent violence in British Columbia is a tragic example of this disorder. The hosts point out that as culture encourages this transgender delusion, we are seeing more instances where this confusion leads to extreme violent acts. It is a harsh reality that when truth is rejected, chaos and evil follow. Is gender confusion demonic? Dr. Caldwell notes that while there may be psychological elements involved, one cannot divorce these struggles from spiritual realities. The transgender movement is fundamentally an anti-God, anti-Gospel, and anti-truth movement. It demands that a person reject their God-given identity to embrace a false one. This is a form of self-destruction that can lead to despair, suicide, and as seen in this tragedy, murder. The only true solution for gender dysphoria and the confusion that plagues so many young people is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The world offers affirmation of sin, but the Bible offers deliverance from sin. How then should Christians respond? We must hate the sin and the evil that destroys lives, but we must also have compassion for the sinner. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that the shooter in Canada, like every person outside of Christ, is enslaved to sin and belongs to the domain of darkness. The Christian perspective on shootings and violence must always come back to the need for redemption. We were all once in darkness until Christ set us free. Therefore, our response is to share the Gospel hope for sinners with a confused and dying world. We do not affirm the delusion, but we offer the truth in love. The Straight Truth Podcast seeks to bring this biblical clarity to the difficult issues of our day, reminding us that God is sovereign and His Word is the only foundation for life and truth.

Hate The Sin Love The Sinner #grace #theology #christianliving
True Christian compassion recognizes that every human being outside of Christ is enslaved to the same domain of darkness. When we see the devastating effects of worldly delusion, we must hate the evil activity, but remember that the very same grace that saved us is the only answer for the lost. Jesus Christ came to set the captives free.
