What is the true face of evil? When we seek to answer the question—what does the bible say about false teachers—we must heed the Scripture's sharpest warning: they are wolves in sheep’s clothing. To fully understand these biblical warnings about false teachers, we must realize that they appear kind, seem harmless, and look presentable—but they are not sheep. They are deceptive, appeal directly to the culture, and are deadly, ravenous wolves.
In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explore the vital necessity of recognizing false teachers in the church. Society routinely judges by outward appearance, assuming that a polite, articulate, or generous person could never be a purveyor of false doctrine in the church. However, God judges perfectly and sees the hidden heart. He does not evaluate based on human standards of charm or likability.
The true face of evil is frequently masked behind a friendly smile. This is why we must practice careful biblical discernment rather than relying on our physical senses or emotional reactions. When we examine the book of Jude false teachers are described in the most severe, uncompromising terms. God views those who reject authority and distort His word as utterly abhorrent and doubly dead, regardless of their public relations skills.
As believers committed to the ultimate authority of Scripture and sound theology, we must align our entire understanding with the biblical view of sin and evil. A major challenge for modern Christians is knowing exactly how to spot a false prophet who promotes abomination while seeming completely benign. Meeting this challenge requires judging with righteous judgment, grounded completely in the objective truth of God's Word.
We must cultivate a righteous hatred of sin, loathing anything that assaults the glory of God, distorts His truth, or harms His flock. We cannot compromise. However, this brings up vital questions regarding the proper Christian response to sin in our daily lives. How do we interact with family members or public figures who are actively promoting rebellion against the Creator?
A faithful biblical worldview demands that we never affirm, validate, or coddle twisted and unnatural behavior. At the exact same time, faithful Christian living requires us to genuinely pray for the salvation of the lost. Just as the Lord transformed Saul of Tarsus, He can save anyone. We must love the lost enough to tell them the complete truth, without ever confusing where our ultimate loyalties lie.
Through consistent bible teaching, we learn that we can completely abhor a person's rebellion while sincerely pleading with God to grant them repentance. Our loyalty belongs to Christ alone.
