Should Christians rely on internal intuition, a.k.a. “their feelings”, when making life choices or when entering into worship? In this episode, we explore why Scripture, not feelings, must be the primary guide for every Christian.
We live in a culture that elevates personal experience over objective truth. But what does the Bible say about trusting your feelings? While God created us to experience life deeply, we must maintain a proper biblical view of human emotions. The role of emotions in Christian life is undeniably real; however, our affections must always submit to the supreme authority of the Word of God. We must prioritize Scripture over feelings in every aspect of our daily walk.
When gathering with the local church, some measure the authenticity of their worship by how intensely moved they are. However, this exposes the grave danger of emotion driven faith. True worship certainly involves the whole man, yet it rests on the unchanging truth of Christ rather than temporary emotional highs. If you are currently struggling with trusting God when you feel nothing, remember that true devotion focuses on what you know for certain from the word of God.
Understanding how to know God’s will for your life is a frequent struggle, and many wrongly look for mystical signs or an inner sense of peace. Faithful Christian decision making should not rely on fleeting sentiments or unbiblical mysticism. If a choice does not violate biblical principles, you are free to delight yourself in the Lord and move forward in making decisions based on biblical wisdom. Sound doctrine provides a steadfast framework where believers can seek out pastoral counsel and sound guidance as they seek to confidently choose a path that glorifies Christ.
It is not uncommon to face dark seasons of sorrow in this fallen world. If you want to know how to deal with spiritual depression or how to find joy when you feel empty, the answer is found in believing God’s promises, not in manufacturing forced happiness. Joy is a settled confidence in the sovereign goodness of God. By filling our minds with the truth of the Bible, our affections will eventually follow our thinking.
This conversation offers profound insights into understanding and applying the Scriptures for faithful Christian living. Rather than asking should Christians trust their feelings, we must constantly ask what has God clearly revealed in His inerrant Word and then how do we live that out. When we continually align our minds with biblical truth, our desires will naturally be shaped by the Lord, His Word, and His Spirit.
