Dying well as a Christian is not about human bravery, but about a genuine readiness to meet the Lord. When faced with the end of life, are you truly ready?
Recently, the news of a prominent figure facing a severe and most likely, terminal diagnosis has sparked conversations about what it means to face mortality. A terminal diagnosis Christian perspective is to be reminded as believers of a sobering reality; every single person on this earth is terminal. Unless Christ returns in our lifetime, we will all pass away, we will all surely die. Therefore, dealing with terminal illness or hearing about it should prompt in us a profound personal inventory and reflection on the Christian view on death.
First and extremely important is that we do not rely on empty platitudes. We rely on biblical comfort for the dying found directly in the whole counsel of God. Understanding what the Bible says about death and applying it to our hearts is the essence of practical Christian living. Rooted in sound theology, we open the Scriptures and consider passages like Psalm 46, Romans 8, and others, to provide genuine Christian encouragement.
When considering how to face death biblically, the greatest priority is reconciliation to God. The most loving action a pastor or friend can take is to examine the assurance of salvation with the dying individual. Knowing the right answers intellectually is not enough. We must be certain that we have truly been born again and possess eternal life through Jesus Christ alone. True peace only comes from a saving knowledge of our Lord.
However, even with a firm foundation, it is completely normal to experience the fear of death Christianity does not ask us to deny this reality. Death is an invader and the final enemy. We can acknowledge our fears and anxieties openly. Finding hope in death does not mean suppressing sadness or pretending the pain of leaving loved ones is not real. True faith looks fear in the face and holds tightly to the promises of God. Yet, our ultimate strength is not in our ability to hold onto God, but in His unfailing grip on us.
If you are wondering about comforting a dying Christian, the answer is found in reminding them of who God is. We must rest entirely on Gods sovereignty in suffering. Has this trial caught God by surprise? Absolutely not. He is both sovereign and perfectly good. Trusting God in hard times requires us to believe that He is intimately with us in the deepest valleys, working all things for the ultimate good of those who love Him.
