What is heaven like, and how should our future in the new heavens and new earth change the way we live today? In this episode, we explore the question: What Is Heaven Like? The Reality We Often Miss.
Many believers struggle to understand what happens after we die, wondering if the Scriptures provide enough details about our everlasting future. A listener recently wrote in asking what the Bible says about heaven, especially in light of the biblical command for Christians to set their minds on things above. In today’s discussion, Pastor Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot address these important questions with careful biblical teaching.
Is heaven a physical place? The biblical view of the afterlife makes it clear that the eternal state explained in Scripture is not a floating, ethereal existence. Pastor Caldwell outlines the eschatological timeline clearly, explaining that the present age will be followed by a time of great tribulation and a literal thousand-year kingdom on the earth. After this, believers will enter the everlasting state, which involves a new heavens and new earth. This future inheritance is a tangible reality where God's people will experience an everlasting existence.
People often ask, will we have physical bodies in heaven, and what will resurrected bodies be like? The Apostle John tells us in his first epistle that when Christ appears, we will be like Him. Believers will possess a sinless, physical nature fitted for a restored, unfallen world that is an unassailable paradise. Just as God created Adam and Eve to work in the garden, our future includes meaningful work, organized city life, and rich fellowship, completely free from the curse of sin.
Setting your mind on things above means focusing your heart and affections entirely on Jesus Christ, who is seated at the right hand of God. What is heaven like at its core? It is being in the direct presence of the Savior forever. The Christian expectation of heaven should profoundly impact our Christian living today. As the author of Hebrews points out, believers are currently strangers and exiles on the earth seeking a heavenly homeland. If we truly desire a future of perfect holiness and worship, we must passionately pursue those same desires right now.
