Are you self-sufficient when it comes to your spiritual growth and understanding of the Bible? In an age of endless digital information, we must examine why pastors are necessary, and why you still need your pastors to guide and guard your soul.
We live in a culture overflowing with instant access to knowledge. From podcasts and video channels to Bible software, believers are constantly bombarded with answers. This raises a critical modern question regarding AI and the church. With so much content available, many Christians might quietly ask, do I have to go to church to learn the Bible? This kind of thought environment breeds a dangerous culture of spiritual self-sufficiency that works directly against the New Testament teaching on church gathering and order.
Unlimited access to information does not replace the importance of the local church. When considering the value of the local church vs online church, we must remember that God has structured His household with physical, local leadership. Relying on internet pastors vs local church elders creates a massive disconnect. If you are wondering, why do I need a local church, the answer is that the Lord designed a specific community where you are known, shepherded, and accountable.
The role of the pastor involves keeping watch over your soul, an assignment given by God Himself. They are under-shepherds of the Great Shepherd. True spiritual maturity requires a heart posture of teachability and biblical submission to pastors. Instead, rightly dividing the Word of truth produces humility and a deep love for biblical community. If you think you know enough that you no longer need your pastors, you are fundamentally misinterpreting the Scriptures you claim to study. True Christian living is lived out in glad submission to the elders God has placed over you in the local body of Christ.
So, do you need a pastor if you have access to vast theological resources? Yes, because biblical ecclesiology demands it. The most mature saints are always the most teachable, recognizing their ongoing need for the specific shepherds God has appointed over their local assembly. Reject the proud independence of this age and embrace the profitable, joyful order of God's house.
