Are you struggling with discouragement and wondering how to cultivate a thankful heart in the midst of difficult circumstances? Discover what the Bible says about gratitude and how true Christian gratitude is a commanded choice rather than a passing emotion.
In this episode, Dr. Josh Philpot and Pastor Richard Caldwell talk about gratitude and thanksgiving starting with Colossians 3 focusing on verses 15 and 16. The command to be thankful reveals that biblical thankfulness involves our volition and obedience. It is not merely a feeling we have no control over. Rather, giving thanks to God requires an accurate recognition of His immense goodness toward us and the world.
This accurate recognition begins with salvation. Believers must constantly remember the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ imputed to our account, and our adoption as sons. Understanding God, His holiness, and our sin helps us understand that we deserve wrath, instead we receive everlasting life by grace. Which should stir in us hearts full of joy for the blessings and kindnesses that God has poured out on us and continues to do so.
We learn how to have a thankful heart through intentional reflection and meditation on the truth. Remembering God's benefits, as commanded in Psalm 103, is essential for our daily spiritual growth. Additionally, Pastor Caldwell warns about the strict necessity of curing Christian ingratitude. He points out the importance of avoiding the dangerous traps of inattentiveness, presumption, and misappropriating our blessings. Deuteronomy 8 reminds us never to believe our own power produced our wealth, accomplishments, or any great achievements of our own.
A thankful heart naturally leads to thanksgiving and joy, as seen repeatedly in Psalm 136. When we practice this discipline, it becomes a solid anchor for overcoming depression biblically. If you are struggling to find joy in difficult and hard times, remember that thanksgiving is fundamentally an expression of faith. Like Joseph who recognized that what men meant for evil God meant for good, we can trust the Lord. Even when men abandon us, the Lord remains faithful, just as the Apostle Paul testifies in 2 Timothy. By trusting God through trials, we acknowledge His absolute sovereignty over every detail of our Christian living.
We see this principle of gratitude and thanksgiving rooted throughout all of Scripture. Looking at the Old Testament, we should reflect on Joseph and his life circumstances, as well as the privilege the Israelites were given in the sacrifices of thanksgiving. As seen in Psalm 26, the voice of thanksgiving delights himself in God and all His wondrous ways, distinguishing the heart of the righteous from the heart of the wicked. Faithful biblical preaching and teaching is like this; it becomes sound biblical counseling for our hearts and minds that consistently points us back to these glorious realities. May these truths bring the peace of Christ to rule in your hearts as you meditate on His steadfast love.
