Secret sins often feel safe in the dark, but what happens when you keep them hidden, and what happens when you try to hide sin from the all-seeing all-knowing Creator? Can you hide sin from God without suffering severe consequences in your soul and relationships?
In this episode, Dr. Josh Philpot asks Pastor Richard Caldwell what does the Bible say about secret sins and the folly of concealing sin. In Psalm 94:7-11, Scripture confronts the wicked assumption that the Lord does not see, hear, and know all our thoughts and ways. Likewise, in the passage of Psalm 90 secret sins, Moses writes in verse 8 that God sets all our iniquities in the revealing light of His presence.
When asked how to overcome secret sins, Pastor Caldwell explains that at the root, it is to fear the Lord and depart from evil. Because God is omnipresent, omniscient, and holy, there's no compartmentalizing our lives. This addresses humanity in two ways; to the lost man, this is a call to be honest about your sins and look to the cross of Christ for forgiveness before judgment day, while to the believer it is an exhortation not to be caught in the traps and schemes of Satan that we can get away with secret sin.
Scripture warns in Proverbs 28:13 that he who conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. True confession in 1 John 1:9 means agreeing with God about our sin, which requires confessing and forsaking sin altogether. Genuine biblical repentance is not just saying we're sorry and what we did was wrong, but it's a change of mind and heart that changes our course and trajectory.
Concealing sin and hiding sin from God prevents prosperity because sin is inherently destructive, and the loving, fatherly discipline of God corrects His erring children. To prosper, like the blessed man of Psalm 1, is to enjoy a clear conscience and sweet fellowship with the Father. Conversely, living in secret sin as a Christian hinders our joy and harms others, just as David lived in misery when he hid his sin and grieved the Holy Spirit.
Regarding final judgment, the Great White Throne in Revelation 20 judges the sins of the lost, whereas believers' sins are paid in full at the cross, and Romans 6 teaches that grace frees us from sin and that our works in Christ as Christians are judged for reward/loss. Unlike deliberate concealment, the prayer for hidden faults in Psalm 19 reveals a humble heart asking God to expose blind spots and restrain presumptuous sins. Though Satan accuses our private thoughts, we have an Advocate in Christ.
